X-flow cylinder head identification
I have in my possession 2 x-flow heads
One is flat faced and one has recessed chambered valves. Can anyone tell me which one is correct one for a 711 engine?
Is one standard and one a GT perhaps ?
Which is which?

My 711M 1300cc has flat cylinder head. It is my understanding that all standard 711M Xflows, 1100, 1300 and 1600, whether GT or not, have flat
cylinder heads and the combustion chamber in the piston.
Some tuners do machine combustion chambers into the head.

My Xflow 1600 has the flat faced one. The pistons have a combustion chamber machined into them.

The recessed head is from the early 691 (is that number correct??) three bearing engine. According to the Wallage book these are not really suitable
for tuning purposes...

The 691 engine is from early xflow production, Mk2 Cortina, Mk 1 Capri etc. It can be taken to GT state of tune & a little beyond but the general
recommendation is to use the 711m motors from Mk2 Escort, Mk 3 Cortinas, they`re stronger, can be over bored more & can be made to breath
better.
All Xflow engines are 5 bearing, the 3 bearing engines were all non Xflow as found in Anglias. Consul 315s & Mk1 Cortinas. Even Non cross flow
engines from early Mk2 Cortinas were 5 bearing.
Cheers, Steve.
