manifold measurements

What effect does varying the length of the inlet manifold have on engine performance? And is there a way of working out the optimum dimensions.

I ask because I got to 'design' a custom manifold that will allow me to mate a set of gsx600 throttle bodies to a zetec engine.

thanks

Tony
