BMW M5 Engine?
Anyone completed a kit using the BMW M5 V10 engine? If so, have they been able to use any of the original ECU/VANOS or have they started from scratch
with an aftermarket ECU?
Also any suggestions for a suitable sequential transaxle?

You'd have to use the donor canbus system and dash as far as i'm aware. I've worked out the magic for a e39 M5 engine though.

What's involved for the E39 then?
Just reading through the specs/wiring on the SMG gearbox trying to work out if a homebrew control system for it could ever hope to work!

ms3 will do can bus so theoretically i should be able to talk to the dsg box. if it wont do it straight away out the box im sure James on the ms3
forums will write a module for it. he is only in bham so easy to communicate with.

Dyno torque fitted an E60 V10 M5 engine in an E46 M3 and apparently it needed an ECU and loom which cost over 8 grand alone. Craig at dyno torque is
a master of this type of conversion!
Here is one of his for sale, I want it!

Is it normal to loose 100bhp between the engine and the wheels??

If you want an smg gearbox then you'll need a e36 m3 as the smg stuff its built into the engine loom on its own ecu's.
Mapping the 'm' series engines is very expensive as **I think** both cams have 60deg of adjustment via the vanos. So it'll have to
be mapped with each cam in every possible position at all RPM.
The DTA s100pro can do it and there's a base map but I had quotes of nearly £1300 to map properly! Thats why I stayed with the standard ones as
the engine performs as BMW intended, I'd hate to think how much money the final map on the ecu cost with development.

its usually about 18 % on a RWD front engine manual car. So at that sort of power, yes 100 bhp is not unreasonable. My RX7 had 384 bhp at the
wheels which was 460 at the fly.
