zetec alternator ideas please
Afternoon all,
I hope you're all well?
I've stripped the 2.0l silvertop zetec down and I'm now at the stage of rebuilding.
My old zetec alternator is rather large, and I think it's not charging the battery anyway, so I've decided to change it.
I've searched the forum and I've seen that dihatsu charade/nippon denso ones are probably the way to go, but I've not seen one on
ebay with a pulley to match the existing zetec one. I think it has 6 vee's.
My question is this, can I get a belt 1. Short enough to get rid of the huge block of steel and just use the crankshaft pulley, water pump pulley and
alternator with the correct amount of vee's, and 2. Will the existing zetec alt pulley fit the about alternators?
Any ideas/suppliers/help would be fantastic. It's the last thing really before it can go back into the car.
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Thanks for the quick reply.
I have been looking at those denso ones, but my problem is this...
The original setup is like this:
And I want something like this:
So I need a shorter belt I think, and I'm not to sure where to source one.
Thanks again,
Chris

After reading the post properly i will try again.....
Any motor factors will get you a belt,Just measure the length
and they will order you a belt.
The lenght in mm's tends to be the belt part no.

If you look at any belt part number its made up of the number of ribs, and the length.
Fit your alternator, wrap a tape measure round it, if its say 950 mm look for a belt with 6 and 950 or as close as you can get, you can always meaure
it, Halfords generally have loads on display.

if the above doesn't work, I can have a look at mine as it does exactly the route you are looking for,...
Also in need of an alternator on a silvertop, so watching this thread with interest,...
thanks

Thank you all very much for the replies, I think I'll go the route of a denso alternator, or something similar if it's cheaper and then
use the suggested methods to find a belt.
Thanks all,
Chris

ref drive belt
look at qh website and navigate to the drive belts section of the site(QH2/08 - Fan belts/Drive belts), the belts PART
NUMBERS are made up in the following manner for example: 5PK950
if you break that down in this case the 5 = the amount of ribs, PK denotes that its a "multi-v" belt, the 950 denotes said belts length
in mm.
so you can look at your pulleys and work out how many ribs (or width) you want your belt to have, but even if a pulley has 6 ribs a 5 rib belt is
fine.
you then measure with a bit of string your belts shortest possible length with your adjusters fully in so that you fit the shortest possible belt but
+ 5mm so you can still physically fit the belt.
after you measure off you toddle to a motor factor and reel off the exact part number you have just made up.
For a final imaginary example = 6PK785
any decent store-man at a decent motor factor shouldnt bat an eyelid and shouldnt ask make and model of vehicle if you ask the correct question, as
they should manage to input your part number and get an instant cross ref with what ever their computer has

Thanks for the replies, it's made things much easier now, I really didn't know where to start.
Just a quick one; this may be a really daft question, but, does it matter which way an alternator rotates?
Thanks again,
Chris

generally an alternator is nothing more than a 3-phase unit, when configured as an alternator it can normally run in any direction......
BUT some manufacturers add a directional fan to the unit for cooling purposes, such as some older "Lucas" units in which case they are
designed to run in one direction only, so really the correct answer is "it depends" on the alternator.
cheers

Hector, thank you for confirming that. I've just bought a micra alternator, which doesn't have a fan. I'll have a look when it gets
delivered and work out how I'm going to mount it.
Thanks again,
Chris

I have a Brise unit on mine, nabbed it cheap off ebay
The pulley is the original one off the Ford Alternator, fitted straight on.
I wrapped the old belt round and marked it then measured it, off to Hlafords and bought the correct one...

No, I used the belt in the pic wrapped round it and nipped in the vice, came off easily.
