Engine Change! - suggestions welcome

I had intended to replace my elderly 1.6 pinto with the 2.0 litre one thats sitting in my garage, but Ive just spent a weekend in big engined sports cars, and am considering something else.
So... what else could I go for? keeping the gearbox would be ideal, and I dont want a BEC ....

if you dont want a BEC, 16v VX would be at or near the top of my list.

What big engined sportscars have you been in?

Vauxhall Xe is my choice. The easy alternative would be a tuned zetec or duratec. honda civic type-r/s2000 engines are nice but a lot of money. otherwise a yb turbo (a lot of money again) or a smaller jap engine like the toyota or nissan engines..

for out of the box standard oomph it would have to be the VX red top 16v, i was planning this route but a BEC chassis and engine fell into my lap.

Or cosworth 16v OHC head conversion for a 2.1 pinto, quite a bit of fettling involved i think but if your into that sort of thing then why not.

I actually agree with the other guys...

If you want a light smoothe deliver car engine i would go for a k on injection every time but its not gonna be paricullay cheap.

If you want bags of torque then its got to be a vauxall 2ltr 16v. you need a good chassis to harness the power tho.

To a point it will all come down to how much you want to spend.....

3s-ge from a Mk2 Mr2 or celica. 2l, reliable with about 160bhp (late spec).

Plus, if you can adapt a 4a-ge bellhousing to fit the sierra gearbox I'm sure you can do the same with the 3s-ge.

Of course if you get lucky and find a 3s-gte thats about 200+bhp (Turbo!)

Vauxhall XE 16v, without question. All the bits (bellhousing/sump/clutch etc) are available off the shelf for the conversion so no getting stuck having to make bits if you don't feel inclined to. Bolt on throttle bodies and you have 200hp without the engine having to even come apart (I know you always hear claims like that but my current one makes 176hp at the wheels on the rolling road (202hp at the flywheel) and is totally standard apart from 48mm Jenvey throttle bodies and MBE engine management.)

BMW M20 2.5

170+ BHP, straight 6, RWD Manual..

Pick up a doner for £150 Something like an E30 325i or a 525i.

Loverley engine and should just fit..
