Oil Cooler Orientation...

Is there a correct way to mount an oil cooler (inlet / outlet facing up or down), or could you mount it any way you like?

I mounted mine so the oil entered the bottom and exited the top. That way, there was no air lock and it drained during an oil change.

So on it's side (if going by the picture in my original post)?

Cheers

In that case inlet and outlet at the top as in picture.

Yep, that's the way.

Never mount with both ports down, and putting an oil filter just before entry will help cooling as it will de-aerate the oil.

The oil cooler is under pressure but has (or should have ) good flow, air locks do not tend to be a problem, however draining out the old oil can be.

You really need the inlet and outlet up top so it does not drain down, if you place on its side then have a right angled fitting and take the bottom hose up by the top then back to the block.

As I recall all the MGB oil coolers I ever saw had the hose ports facing up, but then again one was never too sure what BMC was up to.

I used an oil filter with an internal non-return valve to stop the system from draining whilst the engine wasn't running. When I had the cooler mounted as in the first piccy, and as most folks seem to have them, the bottom of the cooler was always a lot cooler than the upper portion, as verified by my infra-red thermo gun. It could have been because I hadn't sized the cooler correctly? But fitting it as per the second picture ensured the cooler was the same temperature over the entire width and hotter at the bottom, cooler at the top, as you would expect.
