BMW v8 advice

Early 90's m60 3.0 engine. Was it ever mated to a manual box if so which one ?

Yes - I had one in my L Plate E34 530i touring...fantastic combination. don't know what the box was, though... but 3rd Gear was Awe ... wait for it ... some...

whats wrong with a pinto carl

i think quite a few bmw manual boxes will bolt straight up
or even better get the M5 V8

Yes so did I untill I did a bit of research on the BMW V8, and found that it is impossable to shorten the sump, something that would be almost certain to be needed in a seven. The reason is that the oil pump is contained in the sump, and unless you go with a dry sump set up, (£1K Plus), then the sump hangs down too far. HTH Ray

why not get the m73 engine. its a lot better engine and much easier to get hold of given the range of BMW M~?'s it appears in.....



The BMW M73 is a V12 piston engine built in Munich, Germany. It has an Alusil aluminum engine block and aluminum SOHC cylinder heads. While most other engines in the BMW had switched to four valves per cylinder, the M73 used 2-valve SOHC heads and featured fracture-split forged steel connecting rods.

even better is the 530d e60 model engine which is twin turbo and weighs hardly anything. only issue is getting the engine out of the bimmer

If the sump is similar to the S50/M50/M52 (E36 M3 etc) engines then you can get about 10 cm clearance below the unmodified sump without going to a silly ride height.

A dry sump would be nice, and I'll be keeping my eyes open for a cheap one, but it's certainly not essential.

Surely the M73 is massive and heavy?

The 5 speeds are thought to be much stronger (and lighter), at least on the 3- and 5- series.
