GM LS V8's

Hi guys,

As well an racing the westie im building a TR7 V8 as well, it had a rover in it but its turned out that tuning the nuts off that and getting 250/260 hp doesnt interest me, so im looking at getting a 5.3 LS L33 Alloy block or an LS1 for it...

I have priced LS1's and they are tbh out of my budget by the time i have it fitted running and a gearbox bought too..

Has anyone looked into used versions of these engines before?

I have seen LOADS on ebay, but i have spoken to a few companies who have said, touch nothing on yank ebay as you have about a 1 in 3 chance of getting something decent when it arrives also it is going to cost around £700 to get it over to the UK.

Has anyone any connections for American breakers? anyone used / fitted an LS1 before? maybe you could give me some idea of the costs and your experience.

Thanks in advance,

Iain

I have been on the phone to him on monday, he says he can do the conversion (and had done 30 now) but he cannot source me an engine..

Reckons the LS1 is the way to go...

I am looking for an engine and any other advice around the topic, because im in N.Ireland i dont like the waste someones time when i wont be offering them any business because of the logistics of things!

Lexus/Toyota V8. 1UZ-FE. Cheaper than cheap. 250bhp stock but that is with fairly restricted exhaust manifolds and inlet. Breathing right it should give 300+bhp. Twin-turbo or supercharged (with bigger injectors) and its good for 800bhp on its standard forged internals. Easy enough and cost effective to do to about 450bhp. Quite wide though as its a 90 degree V. Google 1UZFE tuning. Not much over here but loads of potential from US and Aus.

I plan to use one on my 'next' project!

where did you find information on tuning the Lexus engine? i had thought about one too, any tuning sites or information on turbo kits, i had intended to stay NA but that is tempting..

buy a manual 7 series with the ally block 4.4v8 and 300bhp, run it on a standard ecu and sell the rest of the car, you'll end up with an engine costing peanuts.

have to say that is very tempting, is the BMW v8 tunable? and how difficult are the electronics with that engine? any did they 7's come manual?

PPC did a feature some months ago, that 1st got me interested. Try www.lextreme.com
Also, this link on pistonheads gives dimensions....

What about the Audi V8? They're around 300hp as standard and are pretty sweet engines. Not sure how easy they are to bolt up to a manual box though..

http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/bmw-e38-740-il-for-spares-or-repair--7-series--735i--730i/92590378

found this locally on gumtree... im sure i could lift that full car for 4-500..

That would leave me with full wiring, ecu, all ancillaries, id just need to mate that to a manual flywheel/clutch & box right?

Is there usually a difference in ECU's from manual to Auto?

This is really tempting me now..

Believe me, with 300Bhp in a Se7en, it will be more than a handful.

WHY?? do you want to tune it further, other than "Because I can"

200Bhp in my Viento is plenty (for me), and with a Light car the problem is getting that sort of power (300+ Bhp) from the axles onto the tarmac.
I would have thought a Megasquirt or Omex or similar would solve the ecu / electronics issues, unless you wanted to sick with the Stock ECU.

I'm just interested in why 300Bhp is not enough in a Se7en.
Assuming it is a Se7en that you are puttin it in.

2. Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

LOL i am not putting it into a seven!! im putting it into a triumph TR8, the plan for that being around 950kg so i feel i will need 300hp in that at least to have the fun i want, im used to driving much faster stuff on the track... anything less than 300hp/tonne will bore me in days.

Don't think the 7s did, but the 5 did...
