oil pressure senders

Am after some explanation on single terminal oil pressure senders. I presume the input voltage goes into the only terminal provided and the sender earths at the engine. what about the signal relay back to the dash. How does this work? any info appreciated. Do apologize if its a dumb question jut need to know

Thanks Paul I have read that but still cant find the reasoning behind single connection terminals on the sensor itself. Reason I asked is cause am trying to calibrate my dash but my sensor has a single terminal. it was sold as a sensor with a operating range not a switch. So am a ittle bit baffled as to the return signal to the dash

the resistance just changes as the pressure does? and earths out through the body what exactly do you need to know?

Mine is exactly the same... One wire, and the sensor earths via the engine.

i understand that, but i have a separate lead for 5v to sensor and then another lead for input back into the dash. In this scenario there is nothing to input back to the dash.

Race tech dash2. There is a 100mA limit on the current u can pull from the dash. So the 5v reference from the dash with a right size resistor. I have 3 other sensors wire in already

Thanks for the offer. Worst case I would have to buy a new 2 terminal one

On the rally car I did we had 3 sensors before we got the right one. A single wire on certainly was NOT the one that worked. I'll text the car owner tommorrow if you want and ask if he as the part no still ( his was a dash2 as well).
ETA
You are measuring voltage and not resistance which is why you need a return as well as a feed to the sender. Some info here may help you understand.

Also eta I checked and the sensor you require is on page 18 of this pdf. Insulated return without warning contact.
Choose your threadform and pressure range and thats it. You'll need to work out your resistor size to get the 100ma.

If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

I have the sender on page 20 to go with a VDO gauge. It has a two wire contact for the gauge and a third wire that acts as a standard pressure switch to operate the dash light.
These units are matched to VDO gauges and have a variable resistance from 10 to 180 ohms on the sender wires and a simple on/off for the oil light. Only buy if your dash is programmable for that range.
Don't Race Tech do a sender?

Thanks for the reply guys, Race tech do a calibrated pressure sender, but it would set me back about £100. I have a spreadsheet that does the calibration as long as I have the working range of the sensor. I was just baffled as to wiring the sensor I got. It looks like a new sensor then. Thanks alot

You need the sensor that matches the dash.
The sender you have is for single guage, the guage measures battery voltage and sender resistance subtracts from the two and the needle moves to the pressure value

Ahh so thats how it works. U learn something everyday. I have ordered a suitable one from VDO and would get it calibrated whe nit arrives

Cheers
