Rover V8 to Type 9 - Clutch Advice
Firstly hello, first post
Just looking for some advice on connecting the two. I have a bellhousing with adaptor to fit the standard box. Im unsure on the set up of the flywheel
and clutch that will work with this combination.
Has anyone had any experience with this and could advise on the situation..
Thanks, Rob

Two ways I can think of sorting this one.
1. Drill flywheel for Ford cover plate
2. Rover cover plate with ford 23 spline 1" clutch plate of similar diameter

With rovers it's usual to redrill the flywheel to match the gearboxes standard clutch setup, this will also give you a smaller clutch so will
effectively lighten everything.
There were a few V8 capri conversions to ford, Pilgrim Sumo is sierra based ford running gear I think or try v8 capri conversions.

As above, should work OK.
Also could you put your location in your profile, as it helps with offers of help, and bits etc.
Also what are you building? You can put that into your profile too.
You will always get a farily quick answer on here, an all manner of subjects!
Dont forget to take plenty of pictures of you puild and post them in your archive and in posts... We all like to see what people are doing, Its fun,

Sounds like good advice thankyou, i liked the idea of drilling new holes into the flywheel. Im quite handy on the miller so that could be done without
too much trouble
Iv actually got a little confession to make. Im not building a locost Im gathering info to begin a capri v8 conversion and as you gents will
probably know, RV8's and type 9 gearbox's are regularly used in kit cars, so where better to come for advice than here.
Iv read also that some type 9 boxs from the smaller 4 cylinder engined cars can take less power than others. Is this correct? I wouldnt want to refurb
the box and then shread my gears in 5 weeks. Is there anyway of beefing up the internals of these?

the weakness in the 4 cylinder type 9s is the leyshaft bearings. A company caled bgh geartech can send you a new leyshaft gear and shaft with bigger
bearings which can take a lot more torque than the standard. If you buy a v6 gearbox they have better ratios and if your very lucky and get a very
late box you may find it has heavy duty bearings already, not as strong as bgh but stronger than standard. They have needle bearings in the leyshaft
and the hd box's have longer needles using just 2 spacers instead of the 4 on a non hd box. I know this as ive spent the last 2 weeks rebuilding
my box as it blew on the dyno (propshaft failure caused the box to break). I used the bgh parts and i was very impressed with their knowledge and
help.

The Rover P6 V8 (4 speed box) used the same clutch as the early Ford V6 Essex....chances are you'll be fine with the 240mm 23x1" spline
plate (not the same as the LT77/SD1 setup, IIRC), Rover cover and flywheel. Only thing that will need looking at/checking is your release
bearing/method.
Long live RWD...
