V8 LT77 + SD1 Rover. Clutch question
I have a rover v8 sd1 at a mates house which we are rebuilding for the cortina project im sure many of you know we are doing. OR trying between
drink......
Anyway
We are struggling to get the gearbox to mate with the clutch. The splines dont seem to match. both engines are from landrovers and the clutches came
with engine and attached to the flywheel.
QUESTION.
I there a difference in clutches and spline count on the LT77 box and the rover v8 engines? any help would be great.
HOW do I know if its the right clutch for the LT77 + SD1 engine.
ALSO
Someone said my box maybe a r380 but I was told it was a LT77 when i bought it.
HELP PLEASE.

Have you tried slipping the clutch plate onto the gearbox shaft to check it's the correct spline? Have you centered the clutch plate when
fitting the clutch ? Have you checked the spigot bearing is the correct one?

Quick way to tell the difference between LT77 and R380 is reverse position. LT77 it is to the left of 1st, R380 it is below 5th

SOME LT77 boxed had less splines on them. I think ones out of a Landy had ferwer, and the Rover SDI had about 21 or 23.
It shouldnt be a problem. There are two clutchsizes 9" and 10"
You cant fit the 10" in a LT77 bellhousing, it wont fit. So you want the 9" or is it 9.5" but not the 10"
Thus you need a SDI Flywheel, and clutch cover followed by the 9" plate with the correct splines.
OR you can use a Rangerover flywheel and get it re-drilled for the smaller clutch. (thats not a home type job)
Also the SDI clutch release bearing is different to the Landy one for the LT77 box.
Whilst you are in there, Make sure you put in a new pivot Ball and a new operating arm for the clutch. These wear on the ball, and punch thru the arm.
So a new one of those every time. Been tere and done that! Its a known rover problem, just change them when you split the engine and box, if they are
even slightly worn.
Always fit new plastic clips and slipper pads as well on the release bearing, they dont cost much and are easy to do when the engine is out.
Beware there are at least three different rover clutch arms.

I'm really struggling with fitting a short shifter and the clutch didn't seem the same.... Gulp
