repackable silencers
I've just started stocking exhaust packing sheets for repackable silencers, but don't have much experience with this stuff so after a bit
of info from any of you guys that have used it.
The packing shets expand once heated so the idea is you put the packing in loose then when exposed to exhaust heat it increases size to fill the
available gap. Now, my question is this, where you have a straight thro' perforated pipe with the sound deadening around it, do you find the
exhaust is quietest with the air space surrounding the perforated pipe solidly packed or loosely packed? I can see an argument for both sides, with
one having more material to absorb the sound & the other having more air space to allow gasses to expand thus keeping it quieter.
Would be interested to hear any first hand experience & also do they give any instructions with repackable silencers indicating how tightly they
should be packed.

I am interested to know this too as I may need to re do mine in the near future. I didn't realise it expanded with the heat. I'm thinking
along the lines of less packing makes it quieter as the noise will enter the box easier.

I'd searched but not thought to do search on Acoustafil, but what's on here doesn't really answer the question (nor do any of the
websites with Acoustafil on).
I know how the product works in terms of expansion etc. what I can't find out is whether you are better to pack loosely or tightly hence my
request for any personal hands on experience, I would just like to be in a position to give my customers as much info as possible.

I would have thought a practical test would answer your question. If you fit a repackable exhaust to your car try it loose and with it tightly packed.
First hand advice is always more reliable.

Ideal if I had a repackable exhaust, which I haven't & nor is my car really suited to one, would be a very expensive experiment from my
point of view!

So what is required is a forum user who is local to you and needs their repackable silencer repacking free of charge as a developemnt excercise.

Now you see that's what I like, a bit of thinking outside the box & a bit of "you scratch my back & I'll scratch
yours" - the only prob I can see with that (other than the fact that there don't seem to be many kitcar owners in Essex judging by the
attendance at our monthly club meets!) is that we would need to pack the box twice, once loosely, then warm up & take noise readings, then cool
off & repack with extra wadding then warm up & take noise readings again, might be fun getting wadding back out of course if the looser fill
proved better! 
Editted to say that the offer is there if anyone wants a run to South Essex to repack their silencer!
