Positioning a Zetec

Having finally found someone to fabricate some engine mounts for us, we are now into the 'where shall we put it stage' of engine positioning (before you all say it, I know it has to go at the front!). I have read on a web site that if you put a Zetec in a 7-a-like you have to offset it slightly to allow room for the ancillaries. Has anyone used a Zetec that would be able to offer some advice? If not I guess we will just drop it in in the middle and worry about it later when stuff doesn't fit!

I think you would find several people on this site who would not agree even which end it should go in let alone it's lateral position.

And I'm one of them, best place is sideways behind the cockpit

Damn right it is John!
Doesn't help Stuart though, but at least it brings the thread back to the top for some "real" help

If you've already got the engine then the best plan would be to fit the ancillaries to it and try it in the chassis. It won't just be the lateral positioning that you may have to adjust.
If you don't already have the engine then I wouldn't recommend going much further with the chassis build in the engine compartment/transmission tunnel area until you do.

I'm fitting a Zetec into a MK Indy at the moment. The only areas that are of concern are.

1) The oil fiter and steering shaft which if you have to mount the engine high come into contact. Easily solved using a remote filter.
2) Checking that the carbs/injection/t/bodies and filter don't hit the top chassis rail. There is plenty of room but not if using large foam air filter(s).
3) Get the sump modified to give ground clearence. Choice is to cut and shut standard Ford item, or buy a aftermarket one.

Thats about it! Theres plenty of these engines fitted in other "7" style cars so most problems have been sorted long ago.

Mine has been mounted with the front pulley about 1-2 inches towards the nearside of center to give extra room for carbs/injection, causes no problems at all.

A few companies seem to be bringing out kit to convert Ford injection system so if it comes with the engine don't throw it in the bin just yet.

Someone somewhere once told me that the sump of the scorpio 2.0 is as deep as the gearbox is low, haven't been able to check this any where yet but might be worth looking into. Is prob a lot cheaper than buying a 'special' sump

I think it was chrisG and that was a pinto! There's never been a Scorpio fitted as standard with a Zetec. People get mixed up with thw 2.0 an 2.3 I4 deivatives that were in the Scorpio as they look a bit zetec-ish but they have nothing in common. A Zetec is basically a CVH with a 16v head.

Nice to see this thread near the top again. Funnily enough on the subject of sumps, we picked up our nice new sump today from Dunnells in Stowmarket (5 minutes from where I live). Very useful guys for Zetec stuff.

Apparently fitting a standard sump is no good, coz the original was designed to be transverse, so when fitted the other way, the engine is starved of oil under braking and acceleration. Dunnells do a very nice 'baffled' version, although it is a bit on the pricey side.

As for the original question of the mounts, we have decided to get all the bits that 'stick out' and then work out where the engine should go.

Be interesting to know what the MK ones are like. Guess I will go and have a look at their site to see if there are any pics.
