pinto 1.6 --> 2.0

Guys,

Since i got my indy on the road two months ago, i noticed it lacked power. That'll be that 1.6 pinto engine in the front then....

A simple swap would be a pinto 2 litre, but i'm not too sure if the exterior dimensions are the same. If the 2 litre is taller, where does this extra height come from? is the dimension from the centreline of the crank to the top of the rocker cover the same and did Ford just fit a deeper sump, or is the actual block higher? If not, i can use the exhaust, engine mounts and gearbox mount i have on the car now.

Thanks Dave,

That's good info. So keeping the exhaust i have now will probably be out of the question (the exhaust manifold will be 1 inch higher, so the downpipe i have now will need to be 1 inch longer)

I'm assuming the relative vertical position of the engine mounts is also the same as per 1.6, can someone tell me if this is true?

I also depends which 1.6 you have, the 1.6 emax is a 2 litre with thin little pistons fitted, easily recognised because it ha a '2' on the cambelt cover. The normal 1.6 is about 1" shorter

That is unless your 1.6 is the later 1.6 E-max. these used the same block, crank and rods, as the 2.0 except for smaller bore on the pistons. So the heights would be the same.

Hope this helps.

Enjoy
Sorry mark I didn't read to the bottom of the postings.

i was considering upgrading to a twin cam but i couldnt bear to throw my custom exhaust away... i spent hours cutting and welding. are the flanges the same on the 1.6 and 2.0 carb engines? might be an ok swap if it is...

Yep, the same, just the height is different IF the 1.6 is NOT an E-max.

Enjoy

sebastiaan, slightly off thread but you've got me worried now. when you say it lacked power, just how disappointing is it.

whats its 0-60 like. most importantly will it be significantly faster than my '92 1.6 cavalier shed? (sorry hatch)

cheers

tom

No worries Tom, it'll whipe the floor with your Cav. It's just that i'm a bit of a hooligan and like to shred tires ;-)

The car now feels quite nimble an fast enough for road use, but also like a bit of track action. I think around 150HP would be more then enough for me, and is double of what i have now.

If you intend to use your car only on the road, a 75HP se7en driven in anger is actually faster then just about everything. (err, except a 150hp se7en that is...)
