Crossflow low compression help!

Hi Guys,

So i have a 1300 xflow in my car, it's been a bit poorly as follows:

All 4 spark plugs have oil on the threads (can this be from overfilling the oil?)
If i remove all four and refit, the car seems to run quite nicely, but when i then come back the next day it's running like a pig again, and again oil on the spark plugs.

I have just done a compression test, it was only showing around 60-65psi on all 4 cylinders and didn't change when wet (although as there is already oil in the bore i didn't think this would!)

I am already geared up to strip the engine and have a full gasket set and valve stem seals, but wondered what you guys make of this?

Thanks in advance.
Andy

Is the compression tester ok because 60 psi is very low if there all even i think the tester is faulty,But if the plugs are oiling up then you most likely be stripping the engine. anyway..

there is a good chance the tester could be a pile of crap as it didn't cost a lot...

In regards to oil in the spark plugs, what are the possible causes for this?

If there is blue smoke on start-up but it then starts to run clear, I would suspect valve stem seals. If the engine smokes all the time whilst running, then suspect worn rings/bores. If there's a puff of smoke after overun whilst driving, that would also point to inlet valve stem seals.

Are you compression testing with the engine warm and the throttle fully open?

I think there is more smoke on overrun, I did the test cold with throttle wide open

Leak down test would be best or a decent compression tester BEFORE stripping the engine to bits to confirm where the issue lies.
However, from your comment/s i'd be thinking Valve stem oil seals or valve guides.

Compression test should ideally be done with the engine at operating temp and with a fully open throttle.
