Any body had much experience with a polo rad, i.e. how well do they work?

I know a few people who track westfields who found them insufficient, but they were pottent machinery so who knows..

Sorry to counter you guys, but I bought a Polo rad on the strength of Daves info.

Got it home, would fit okay to the existing Luego mounting brackets, then tried the nose cone!

No Way will it fit!

Because the Luego rad brackets are designed to hold a MKII Escort Rad between them, which is a square rad rather than rectangular, there is sufficient room for the nose.

As a result can't use a Polo rad, but would live to know what you can use as MKII rads are hard to come buy with a performance core.

Ben, make new brackets! the velocity nose conre is bigger than a locost one, so it will fit, may need a little work i guess..

Ned, don't want to start cutting the chassis etc as it is all powder coated, and secondly don't have welder/can't weld.

Surely there must be a better solution than modding the chassis?

Couldn't you rivet the new brackets on?

I can't see you being able to fit another rad to MKII brackets. I don't know of anything else that has the same bolt pattern.

If you must use those brackets then I'd be pretty sure then you've gotta use a MK2.
Plenty of people have used the rad successfully though so it can't be all that bad!

True, have taken it back now!

I would like to use it as it is alot better than an Escort Rad, just don't want it to look like a dogs dinner!

You can get rads re-cored to maybe you can just get a MK2 one re-done to your spec'.

James, Have run out of hours in the day at present. All work has stopped on the car for a few weeks, as I am flat out refurbing a flat in Sutton, so wan't be able to make any meets until Dec!

The Polo rad was recommended first by Dunnel to me as they have used it in 250bhp cars no probs. There are a few other things to take into account like plumbing and thermostats as well as cooling fans, but all basic stuff. The other point to think about is getting hot air out of the engine bay. I see a lot of Westfields with no cool air supply for the carbs/injection due to an enclosed bonnet, and therefore the hot air from the rad has nowhere to go, hence their need to use a ducted nose for larger engines.

Yeah!, Great rad but it certainly will not fit on Escort brackets, a bit of grinding and welding needed.

But I reckon the Caterham nose I use is the smallest so it will fit anything else out there....

I've got a Mercedes 190 rad, 292mm wide x 320mm high (core area), triple row, copper/brass construction with plastic tanks top and bottom. Listed in local rad. dealer book for up to 2.5 litre cars. In and out pipes are on the side but the overall rad is small enough for that not to be a problem. Its a Luego Locost chassis which I believe is the same size as the Velocity at the front end.

Brass and Copper rads are very heavy!

I thought the same about not chopping any bits on the chassis about cos of the powder coating, but I am now chopping all sorts of bits about, and welding and all sorts. Just touch it up with plasticote afterwards.

I know this isn't ideal, but if the car isn't how you want it then you have to make it how you want it!!!!!!

It was new but had been knocking around our load rad suppliers for awhile, they tested it & painted it for £40 cash.

I'm going to put a T-piece in the top hose for the header tank connection.

I don't think the weight is too much of a problem, I will weigh it over the weekend for interest.

I bought a Merc 190 (2.0E) from the scrappie when I had doubts about the micra one, it cost £3 and is aluminium with plastic tanks, has the mrec part no and symbol on it
