Any TIG welders?
Hi everyone,
I am chopping the sump on my MX5 engine, so I am going to need someone to TIG a aluminium plate on the bottom and a sump plug fitting on the side -
can anyone here do that? Preferable in the midlands area but I can post the sump out if needed.
Thanks
Shaun

Hi Shaun
This will be a bit of a strange response but here goes.
I'm willing to do this free of charge if you can sort posting and collection.
The thing is I can't guarantee success and that's why I won't charge. I want to practice my ally welding hence the offer.
I presume the sump is cast ally - which can present a few challenges with impurities and being contaminated with oil won't help.
I should add I'm a very competent MIG, Stick and gas welder.
A genuine offer, but I won't be offended if you don't want to risk it.
Rob

I,ve welded 3 ford ones, one went very well, no drips, one had a couple of pin holes that needed sorting afterwards and the last was a bit leaky
The problem is the quality of the metal used in the sumps, some is more porous and after a number of years gets oil saturated and for Ali welding even
ink from a marker pen can create a problem so it's a bit hit and miss anyway.

I had mine done by K4KEV on the haynes forum. I supplied the ally and cut everything ready to be welded.
will post pics for you as i'm in work now.

I can do it if you like cast is no more difficult to weld than fresh sheet just alter the settings to aid the cleaning process of the ac and to
slightly preheat the sump
Thanks lee
