Bike engine kit car
Hi,
I'm having second thoughts about changing my pinto engine to a newer ford engine.
Now I'm looking into motorbike engines (being a bike myself - may be a reason for this!)
Now in brief would anyone be able to help me with what I need to get together.
Obviously a bike engine - r1 or early blade engine
Now I plan on using the bike dash on my kit car (mk indy r). (Lotus 7 style)
So is this just a case of dropping a bike engine into my car.
Can I leave the well mounted mitsibishi radiator on the front and connect the bike motor to that?
Will I simply be able to extend my wiring loom to allow me to put the bike clocks and dash into my car dash?
What other things am I needing to do? I can't really see how they are mounted to these cars, even after a good look around on the net?!
I take it I can run my bike engine final output drive and mount this to my car prop shaft? (Can I keep the rear mounted sierra dif, and the prop shaft
assembly?
How easy is it to set up the gear change system (push rod I take it?)
What about clutches? Are we talking clutch less gear changing?
This seams to be an easier method than a new ford engine instal?
Has anyone got any useful well pictured links I could use??
Thanks again chaps

There's a guide HERE
Yes, you can extend wires to make the loom and clocks fit.
Not exactly, probably need some mods to the motor like sump baffle etc
Yes your existing rad should be OK
Transmission comes by removing the sprocket and fitting a drive flange to connect to the prop and diff with the engine mounted longitudinally.
Existing prop won't be long enough.
Gear change is easy enough with some thought. Mine...

Take a look at my pics in my thread in the BEC section of forum, I've converted a Zetec mac1 chassis to take a R1 engine.
Can you weld?
As you will need to weld in mounts and a bar to mount top engine cradle too, and a mounting point for the propshaft centre bearing..
Propshaft needs to be a Sierra two piece one with a centre bearing, the front section needs modifying to accept the flange to bolt onto the prop
adapter on engine.

Thank you everyone and that is a helpful post. Does anyone know any garages that can carry this work out for me or would they charge a fortune
(hampshire area) willing to travel.
It doesn't seam like too much work tbh, but I'm looking at this recent weather and can't face having it off the road for any
longer!!

it will almost certainly be easier and cheaper to sell your car and buy a BEC!
cost wise it will be expensive to swap over when you consider whats needed;
new engine,
new fabricated engine cradle,
sump mods/baffle etc
ecu/power commander/clocks/wiring/air intake
gear linkage,
reverse gear,
stainless exhaust system
new prop adaptor
new prop,
new diff
+labour costs
it could run into several thousand £ before you know it and the likelihood is your current pinto setup will not fetch a massive amount to offset the
cost of the swap.
its all possible though so which ever way you go,good luck!

Did you manage to find the posts.
You can keep the costs down if you can weld and get a fulll engine and loom etc and your dif ratio is ok.
I got my laser cut sump baffle for £30

that was my thought when reading the post, would a Sierra diff from a CEC still be ok in a BEC?

Depends on which ratio it has, which engine and what it's going to be used for.

Which is why I know how much things cost in modern times! Or is he going back in time 10 years and building a fury?
