Help......Fuelling Problems
Help please......my car has been faultless engine wise since build completion in July 2011. Over the weekend went out in the car to get some cash
prior to taking my daughter to a party. I noticed a change in the tone of the fuel pump and some strange noises / erratic sounds from it although car
continued to run ok although admittedly only on tickover. At this point was in two minds whether to put the car away and take the tin top but elected
to take it anyway.......under low load (gentle driving) car seems fine. As soon as you give it some "beans" it coughs, splutters and
struggles. I think it is fuel starvation and the pump might be on it's way out........only reason for this though is the noise from the fuel
pump.
It's a 2.0 Zetec running ITB's (R6 Yamaha) on Megasquirt and as said has been faultless up until now. Fuel pump is an inline bosch type
that I acquired from FlakMonkey on here 3+ yrs ago. Low press fuel filter seems clear and High Pressure filter changed about 500 miles ago.
It could be the regulator I guess which is the standard Yamaha one on the return of the fuel rail.
Help please on how to check / eliminate the pump / regulator? Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

Have you got a filter before the pump? If not you need one!
Pull the pump off and gentle tap the inlet on a table and see if any rubbish falls out.
If possible also remove the fuel pickup in the tank as this may also be clogged, if you cannot get to this you will have a good idea when you pull the
fuel pump as the petrol should rush out the pipe.
If the pickup is blocked and you can access it, if it has not already got an inverted V cut in the end do this, it stops it getting blocked so
easily.

Noisy pump points toward it either running dry or its kaput, maybe. Which one is it? The 044?
As said I would first check the fuel is free to the pump (is it gravity fed).
I would also double check the micro filter after the pump is the right way round, if its installed back to front the pressure can push the internal
bit against the outlet and block the flow.

Hi Mark,
Yes I have a filter before the pump and it looks pretty clean (glass one that's cleanable). I removed it over the winter and cleaned it and
still looks good now. I will remove the pump and see if I can see anything obvious or restrictions on inlet / outlet but car will still start on the
button but just will not go when driven hard and as said fuel pump making funny noise. The pump is gravity fed via an inbuilt swirl pot /
sump.....it's one of the Alloy Racing ones but has performed perfectly until now.
The HP filter is a sytec one and is arrowed to indicate flow direction. It is correctly plumbed in. I have a spare so will try this as well.
Thanks for replies.
