K-Series Interchangeability

I've recently bought a 1.4 K-Series package from a Caterham Supersport.

I suspect that the 1.4 engine will not satisfy me for long, but figured all the 'right' parts from the package will readily transfer onto a 1.6... or maybe a 1.8???

The parts I'm thinking of are the:

Supersport cams
Supersport Inlet
Flat sump
Bellhousing
Exhaust Manifold
Flywheel / Clutch

Am I right?

what head does your 1400 have? I know the cams are different on the 1800VVC engine obviously, thought its supposed to be the best flowing standard head.

I think the flywheel and clutch are different when you go from 1600 to 1800 too

depends what you want to replace it with?

I was hoping for just a 'bare engine' change - most probably with a 1.6 - but pulling over the Caterham specific goodies.

Here is the bed time reading form Dave Andrews (AKA Oily on Blatchat)....
http://www.dvandrews.co.uk

He's also very helpful on the phone and it would be worth a quick chat with him, he gave my all all the cam timings when I was building a K-Series.

Cheers

The 1.1 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 are really the same engine with different pistons, liners con rods and crank.
In theory you can convert a 1.1 16 valve to a 1.8 turbo.
The 1.8 is less sporty than 1.4 & 1.6 versions as the valves and ports were optimised for the 1.4.

Cheers. I'm going to give the SS engine a go before changing anything. It's reputed to have been fettled by Minster and making 145-ish bhp. I very much doubt that it makes that much power, but I guess I should give it a go. I'd be delighted if it does!

I'm impressed scootz, thinking of what to replace it with before installing

Did I miss something too. What happened to the rx8 engine plans?

The RX8 was sooooo yesterday! It was stripped, scrapped, and it's guts sold to a chap down south.

Not really looking to replace the K... just squeeze a bit more out of it!

I raced a metro with a 1.8k series wich I pulled from a written off elise. Fitted with a ported head and a set of exige throttle bodies, and an aftermarket ecu it made 240hp.The standard non vvc cylinder head can really do with a port job as the ports are same on all the twin cam variants. The bloke that ported my cylinder head took over a 1/4 inch out of each port.My engine would rev like hell and the power kicked in from about 3k and didn't feel like it let off.The k series in my opinion is a highly underated engine

can highly recommend using the 1.8L non VVC engine to transfer your bits to. these are a very good base engine, the 1.8 VVC engine is even stronger but the head has to have a special inlet cam if your are planning on doing away with the vvc, pipercams do a conversion kit with the correct cam and the blanking plates needed, these are quite deer though. The only advantage to the VVC head is it has bigger valves.

that probably helps in no way shape or form but i like to voice my thoughts

Less weight more speed, more power more speed

If in doubt, give it a clout

Hello British Trident isn't there a problem swapping parts over with the early blocks though, the ones with external ribbing?

Phoned the local ramblers club today, but the bloke who answered just
went on and on.

Nearly all the early engines probably went into the melting pot years ago, essentially the difference was the casting process used in manufacture.
The head gasket and other gasket patterns are the same so no problem mixing and matching.
The one thing to watch for is the euro3 spec engines changed to coil on plug ignition with a cam position sensor, the cam belt tensioner changed.
None of these are a major problem to. Work around.

What gearboxes suite the 'character' of the engines best?

I know the Caterham 6-speed is probably No 1, but they are like rocking more dung... and very pricey!

Just seems a shame to bolt a buzzy little engine to a Type 9!

The Rocket / Type E would shed another 10kg off the T9 weight... I'm not fussed about a 5th gear, but would the ratios suit?

A Type 9 with the closer BGH gear set, whilst not cheap, is a hell of a lot cheaper than a Caterham box.

Hi

How did your installation of a 1.4 K Series engine from Caterham Supersport into a Locost go? This is a set up I am considering and was also wondering about using Ford 4 speed gearboxes (Rocket/Type E).

Or do you still have the bits for the conversion?

Cheers
Mike
