Ford Type 9, how easy to rebuild with new gear kit?
Is it worth buying a gear kit from BGH or Quaife and doing the rebuild myself? I have built numerous engines but stayed clear of the gearbox as it
looks like a lot of work. Is it worth paying the extra for a built unit or is it not as bad as it looks to DIY?

Simple enough, get/find a manual covering the box first though, i use an old Haynes book for the 2.8i capri and that tells you everything you need to
know.

I rebuilt a type 2 4 speed gearbox a month ago, and can honestly say its a breeze
I did cheat a bit as had an old junk box that I could use for checking
It does help keeping everything together, and clean, but no different to any engine work
and rubber bands come in handy when its all going back together
plus the Haynes manual was 100% correct

you'll need a puller for 5th gear, good circlip pliers for inner and outer circlips, punches, ideally a press for putting the bearing on the
mainshaft. uprated kits usually mean grinding the casing for clearance aswell.

BGH also do some case modifications to help oil flow as well as clearance
There are photos on the web about grinding the shaft oil ways to promote better lubrication
If your going to do it yourself it's worth incorporating all these extra mods

When I was thinking about rebuilding my type 9 I worked out how much it would cost then got a price for a rebuilt box from BGH , after asking for a
discount it wasn't worth doing it myself

I looked into buying the gear kit, but wasn't confident enough in doing the lubriction mods
By the time i haggled a little, there wasn't a great saving, so I went with a built BGH type 9, to say it transformed the car ( as well as my
bank balance ) is an understatement
