Type 9

Hi all I have a type 9 5 speed and I have had to drain it due to an oil leak... Looking at the Haynes type 9 the 5 speed has two capacities 1.23l and 1.75 or something... I always thought it was fill it until on level ground the oil runs out the plug on the side. I have also heard that you fill it to this level then remove some because of overfilling... I have put a quaife top cover on with a vent so shouldn't be pressurising the box...

Any advice?

Thanks
Dave B

I think the early type 9 boxes had a higher filler/level plug than the latter boxes, I'm sure I've seen photos comparing the height of the filler bungs somewhere , possibly on this forum?

There are 2 different positions the bung can be in originally, giving the 2 different capacities.
I had the lower bung, when i installed a tran-x gearkit i added a higher bung, as the higher oil fill level was recommended.
I think the v6 and diesel boxes had the higher bung position as standard, all my spare boxes have the bung in the lower position, but are from pinto's.
You should be fine filling to your existing bung level though.

The Sierra manual says:

All five speed gearboxes up to April 1984 except those subsequently fitted with a modified extension housing: level with bottom edge of filler hole

All five speed gearboxes from May 1984 to end of April 1985 and all vehicles built up to April 1984 and subsequently fitted with a modified gearbox extension housing: 20.0 to 25.0 mm below lower edge of filler hole

All five speed gearboxes from May 1985: 0 - 5.0 mm below lower edge of filler hole

I've always filled them until it overflows
