quaife LSD noise

Hi All,
I have a quaife LSD noise on my (second hand)new toy which was re-built around £16k miles ago. It is on an live escort axle with discs. When I am manoeuvring at low speed I can hear "groaning" noises from the back end! As with all new toys I don't like un-usual noises!
Could this be the diff?
Or is more likely to be the brakes (I assume it uses a conversion kit from rear drums)... my last kit car had rear drums! With the disc conversion, how does the hand brake work... could this be sticking / causing the noise.
Cheers
Alex

Had 2 Quaiffe diffs, one in an Ital axle and the other in a Sierra diff housing. Both have been silent only becoming noisy when bearing have been worn. Certainly no noise when manoeuvring.

Are you sure its a Quaiffe? Plate diffs moan when manoeuvring.

pretty certain it is a quaiffe diff.... all the documentation with the car mentions this. I know it is not possible to check for a quaiffe diff by jacking up the car, is this possible with a plate diff? Handling wise it has some kind of locking diff ;-)

Depends on which Quaife diff, ATBs should be silent AFAIK but Quaife also bought out Tran X a while back and also supply the plated type which can make noise when manoeuvring at low speed.

It is.

Beautiful assistant needed.

Jack up car.

Open diff. Turn one rear wheel and other rotates in opposite direction. Get beautiful assistant to hold one wheel while you turn the other, your wheel should turn freely whilst there is no movement on the opposite.

Plate diff. Turn one wheel and the other should move in the same direction. Get beautiful assistant to hold one wheel while you turn the other, if the diff is working your wheel should not turn without ripping the wheel out of your assistants hands.

Quaiffe diff. Turn one wheel and the other should move in the same direction. Get beautiful assistant to hold one wheel while you turn the other, your wheel should turn freely whilst there is no movement on the opposite.
