Vw engine issue.
Evening all.
My mates having issues with his mk4 golf 1.4 engine. Its misfiring on no.1 cylinder. Its throwing up the fault codes for cyl1 misfire and random
misfire. He started out with new plugs and swapping the coil from cyl 4 which made no difference. I went round yesterday and we did a compression
test.
With a warm engine we got 140 200 200 200. With a smidgen of oil down the top we maybe got a 5-10 psi increase on cyl1. With the (new) plugs removed I
noted all 4 plugs were blackish and seemed to have a film of oil on them. Now I would have expected #1 to be blacker if there's oil getting past
the rings or valve guides but not the other 3?
Googling seems to bring up that these 1.4 16v engines are made of cheese and suffer a lot with valve and guide issues so my money would be on that. I
appreciate a proper leak down test may give more info but is there I can do to narrow down the fault?
He's chomping at the bit to order a recon cyl head but I won't have time to remove the head to investigate further before he wants to
start getting spares together. He'd looked at a replacement engine but there's no guarantee he'd get a decent one.
Any further pointers or experience gratefully received.
Steve

Yes it looks like a valve problem, a proper leakdown test is ideal but homemade adaptor to put low pressure air into the cylinder on the compressions
stroke should reveal the leakage by hissing in the exhaust or less likely the inlet.
However without a leakdown test of any kind I would be confident in going straight to lifting the head based on the compression test.

The 1.4 vw engines do have a habit of burning valves. Unfortunately I'd say that's your problem.

The 16 valve 1.4 dohc engine has a reputation for excessive oil consumption at early mileages due to piston ring problems. It's a
'characteristic' of this engine. Thus the oil on all the plugs. Have a look on the VW forums before your mate spends money on a recon
head.
The old cast iron 8 valve 1.4 is more agricultural and long lived.

As long as it was a decent smidgevof oil into no1, is enough to discount rings, then pulling the head is the way to go. After all, if compression is
down the head needs to come off anyway, no ifs or buts. I would hesitate to buy anything (except gaskets) in advance, it is easy to assume and buy
stuff you don't need. I have a collection of t shirts! It could just be a couple of valves required? But until you have had a look you are just
guessing.
Your friend needs to be patient if he wants your help. Suggest he chills out....or finds a garage to do the job.

I came across this looking for something else https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RENPchQldUY
If the car has a Schrader valve on the fuel rail an on car injector balance test would show it up without pulling the fuel rail.
A DIY test would be to move the injector to another cylinder.
But it dosen't rule out a valve problem.

Have the valve clearances been checked?
