Zetec Blacktop noise identification
Afternoon all,
I have recently replaced the silver top Zetec in my F27 with a blacktop.
When I initially got the new engine up and running it seemed all ok bar a tweak or two with the map, however it has now developed a ticking/tapping
noise.
I have uploaded a video below.
Can anyone point me in the right direction of the problem and hopefully how to fix it please...

Thanks
Liam

Knackered cam follower? How many miles has the engine done?
Always biting off more than I can chew.....

I was told around 40k, but have no proof.
How would I identify this is the issue?

it may have slipped a shim out of follower

My blaktop mad a similar, but not exactly the same noise and that was a badly worn piston and bore causing piston slap. I don't think yours is
the same but if you can't find anything wrong on the cam front I'd take the head off and have a look.

Take cam cover off and the shims sit in-between the cam and follower they look like a 10 pence piece

No I idea on the pressure front as I don't have a gauge.
Is it easier enough to fit one? What should the pressure read when hot?
Correct oil, 5w30 if I remember correctly.

Mine was about 40 cold and up to 80psi hot. That was head pressure as I had mine plumbed into the handy 1/8th npt up there..
Anyone else got any hot oil pressure info to share???

What have you done with the sump as that sounds like a rod slapping the windage tray ?
Have you fitted arp rod bolts or disturbed them ?

I've fitted a Raceline sump. The noise Only happens when the engine is hot though, Wouldn't it happen when cold too if it was something
hitting the sump?
Haven't touched the rod bolts.

Check your cambelt timing, it does sound like mechanical contact possibly from the top end.
I had an alfa that had been overrevved and had sheared a cam pulley key, and the pistons were clipping the valves due to the extra advance on the
camshaft causing it to tick like the tappets were wrongly adjusted when hot - luckily when retimed all was fine, another few degrees would have needed
a top end rebuild.
If the timing is correct, run up til the noise is clearly audible, stop and remove all the spark plugs and turn the engine by hand slowly feeling for
any unusual changes in resistance and any noise.
If the rattle is from the small end, it should reduce if you disconnect the injector for the affected cylinder - engine off, disconnect then start up
engine for each cylinder in turn and listen for changes in the rattle.

Thanks Dave.
Would be a relief if it was something as simple as the timing being out!
