zetec engines

what is needed to get a standard zetec engine working with the standard ECU (no bolt on bits, after market ECUs or carbs). I have seen posts that you have to fool it. just what is required and which donors are the easiest to do.

note that, yes, aftermanket stuff may be better, blah, blah. I want it cheap for now. upgrades can wait until later,

Some of you must be running standard injection + ECUs.

the first thing the "on a budget" section says is "fit carburettors" I want to keep the fuel injection.

Has anyone done this themselves?

I'm currently working on it myself, and have just launched a topic on this with the questions I have.

It has been done before, so I would say go for it. It isn't very hard, as I understand. But it might be wise if you have more knowledge about engines than me, but then again, that's not so hard, as I actually know NOTHING!

Smart, what type of Zetec are you using? Silver or Black top? This can make a difference, to the ease of running it with standard stuff

Still planning at the moment. Dont want to buy the "wrong" engine.

The 1.7 Setec SE looks to be the pick of the zetecs - 30-40kg lighter and at 125PS more powerfull than the 1.8, though not as much as the 2.0. Perhaps a 2.0 might be a safer bet as it is more common.

what is all this black top / silver top business?

Is one semi skimmed ?

Have a look on here at some of the prices. Everything for the black top seems to be about 1/3 dearer.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

i believe the Black top is the later one with solid (instead of hydraulic) lifters in the head so is more tuneable and reliable. Allegedly you can get easier power with the Blacktop but there is a premium (cost). There was a couple of new crate motors on ebay last week. Keep your eyes open for a bargain.

HTH.

Simple words of wisdom from experience of trying to fit a blacktop to a fury here...

For the simplest install, go Silvertop

For the stronger engine, go Blacktop

The 1700 is not really a zetec. It was fitted to the Puma, and I think that getting spares could be a problem in the future.

The silver top is the earliest of the engines and easier to install in some ways. There are two models of the black top, one with a complete alloy sump and one with a two piece alloy/tin combo. The later makes mods to the sump easier.

If you are planning on running standard injection etc.. the silver top is the way to go. However if you are planning on putting carbs on the latest black top should be easier.

There are other things to consider, like if you get an eariler one you don't need to worry about the water pump direction, as it is already going the right way. Loads to consider.

I personal installed the latest zetec as it was the one I could get my hands on for a very good price at the time.
