Type 9 gearbox Speedo drive gear
Hi
Due to the speedo cable breaking in the drive gear I need to replace it. I have removed the old one after a lot of fiddling. Have got another one from
a different box but it has a different number of teeth. Are the gears inter changeable despite the different number of teeth ??? They are both the
same diameter.
Any info would be good.

I would give a bit more info on what type of gearbox you're using to be able people to reply.

First off , it might be a good idea to tell us what gearbox you have? If it is a Ford box they maybe identified by colour so you would need one the
same unless your Speedo can be calibrated . A different number of teeth will definitely alter the speedo reading

Many manufacturers use different coloured gears for different teeth to suit differing diff ratios/tyre sizes etc and most are interchangeable.
Which gearbox?

Yes understand it will change the speedo, but no problem with that. It's more about if it will fit and run/mesh ok.

I believe but could be wrong , the drive gear that actually drives the speedo gear is the same on all type 9s?

Yes, they swap. I managed to get my speedo within 1mph between speedo and satnag. At 116mph on the autobahn . (you can almost see the fuel gauge
moving at that speed) all by swapping between the plastic drive.

Many thanks. It sounds as if it will fit and mesh ok.
Yes I understand the gear inside the box is the same on all type 9 boxes. Which means all the different cable drive gears must mesh and drive ok.
Thinking about it some more I will put the old drive gear in to the other box and turn it by hand. I should then be able to see if it meshes and
turns, with out jamming up.

I dont know about the type9, but on the type 2 Ford gearbox the spiral drive on the output shafts were always the same, but the plastic speedo drives
were not, there was at least two types, one Blue, the other Brown, and they defiantly had different amount of teeth on the cog
I presume, as there were about 3 different back axle ratios on different marks of escorts, this was done to keep the speedos calibrated the same

Is the cable bent tightly at the gearbox? As that might have caused it to snap in the first place and if not sorted the next cable will just do the
same.

Hi
Yes it is a tight fit, but it has been good for 14 years.
The problem I’ve got now is getting the circling on. It very close to a chassis rail.
