Which is the best and why?
Pinto or 2.0l DOHC?

i cant decide for you (it is a matter of preference i think), but the pintos tend to have simpler wiring, the twin cams will have more power. then
there is also space and shape, not sure exactly how they compare though.

Pinto has the most aftermarket support so tuning can be done on the cheap. Plentiful supply if anything goes drastically wrong, too
Original DOHC as in Sierra etc is an OK engine but has limited aftermarket support and has a reputation for eating heads for no apparent reason. Oh -
and it's a chain driven DOHC, too
This help?

Oh - if it's the 16v DOHC out of a Mondeo, then that'll be your best option for power etc. but could be a more costly installation - quite
a few niggly little bits to catch you which aren't obvious at first.

My basic concerns are cheap parts, the availability tuning products and overall size/ease of installation. Power isn't too much of an issue and
I'd prolly rather run carbs.

Dohc is not a bad motor and I have owned both pinto and twin cam engined granadas and sierras .Now with out doubt the most fun is the twin cam as it
has a lot more low down torque .It does not need to be injection as they made them with carbs aswell (about 100bhp )..
Now the down side Its bigger heavier and will cost you a mint just to do a headgasket .This and its bad rep is enough to put me of mine. So I will
be goeing with a zetec..This engine can be had for the same money as a pinto but instalation will cost far more....(induction /ignition /exhaust ect
ect ect).....
If cost is an issue then the twin cam wins hands down because not even the banger racing boys want them

DOHC - Big, heavy, blows headgaskets, breaks camchains, not really tuneable or worth tuning!, VERY limited tuning bits available for the 8v one (yes,
I have experienced a car with one in, prefer the 2.9 4x4 ta!!)
stick with the crossflow or pinto if on a budget!

I would go Pinto over Sierra DOHC any day. My donor was DOHC, the head was NG and one of the liners was porous which led me to believe they are not so
reliable when they get to 90K+.
Pintos in std trim or not as powerful but a cam change soon sorts that out. Later there is a huge selection of tuning potential to suit any budget.
Pinto is a dated engine now but i believe there is still life in them yet - just as there is with the crossflow (my father has 1700 xflow in an MK -
superb combination - fast enough for most people). Additionally they are so easy to work on for the beginner. Later i hope to go zetec or duratec but
for now the Pinto will provide enough interest.
These are all my personal preferences / experiences. Im sure there are some v.good DOHC motors out there if std is good enough, and they are usually
cheap (if not given away).
HTH,
Darren.
