i vaguely seem to recall that the exhaust manifold is different - maybe fluted on the 16v? its a distinctly flimsy memory, but it gives you something to go on in the absense of a sure answer!

ps, inj or carb?

The dohc 8 valve has a totally different cam cover doesn't it? I thought the 8v had a plastic, flat cam cover, and the 16v has an alloy one, if I remember correctly (can somebody else confirm this one!)

also doesnt the 16v zetec have a cam belt, and the 8v DOHC have cam chains.

I think the 8v is only found in late sierra's and granada's up to 91/92.

No, the 16v in question here has a cam chain same as the 8v. The zetec has a belt drive but the I4 16v here has chain drive. The bottom ends between the I4 8 and 16v's are virtually (exactly??) the same, but the 16v has a VERY good cylinderhead (apparently similar to Cosworth BDA in basic design) but both unfortunately are very heavy, more than a pinto!
