Have I gone to far ???

I have a lowered sump on my zetec engine and decided to trim the gear box to match...

Question is, have I gone to far...Ive not removed any of the housing but have removed all the webbing which would give it strenth...Ive left about 5-6 mm..

Another thing ive noticed is there is only 5 bolts to hold the box to the motor and none of these are below the block is this ok ????????????

pfff

its an very very difficult question..

the way to ask this question is ( a bit late)

with more pics to be able to compare... the situation...

if you take of the "vins" that give strenght to the box.. take them any way of wich are horizontal....(the give strenght for side forces..

the vertical ones give stenght for up and down movements..

as far as i know in a car locost you put 2 mountings for the engine and the theird is the box..

so in factthe engine want to cut thebox in 2..

anyway i don't think you have screwed up the situ....

but to be sure we will need more pics...

whats the weight difference between the zetec and the pinto/ original engine for the box..???

for your bolts question it will all depends on the Bolt diameter? and the size of ring you use..

the bigger you can use the better it will hold the pieces together....

I had an Escort with starter motor and 3 other bolts and it was o.k. for years. The ones below the block are only through the closing plate anyway aren't they?

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

You've been busy tidying up your "chop". I simply cut off the bottom bolt fixings from the bell housing, without breaking the circle, that used to bolt to the sump, that I also "chopped" (DOHC engine)

It leaves the same bolts you identify, which do seem top heavy, considering the tendency will be for the engine and box to "sag"

However I understand that plenty of people have done it, without problem. In my case I now have no gearbox or engine sump below the bottom of the chassis, and that is good for ground clearance.
