I'm guessing the long stroke Duratec is the 2.3L engine used mostly in the US.

I understand that the 2.3 is used in the Ford Ranger and Focus and Mazda variants. There are different power characteristics quoted for them. I'm not aware that it is in any UK model at the moment, although I think that there may possibly be a Focus version coming. I think that the Mazda version has variable valve timing.

The 2.3 is a longer stroke version of the 2.0 with the same bore size. The block of the 2.3 is about 11mm taller, the con rods are longer and the Ranger has lower lift cams and lower compression pistons. However I understand that the 2.0 cams are a straight swap and give about 25% extra lift. The standard 2.3 pistons are dished and around 9.7/1, the 2.0 pistons fit but raise the compression to about 12/1 without mods, which is a tad high for road. Low mileage 2.0 cams and pistons are becoming available due to 2.0 upgrading.

On my 2.3 from a Ranger the external obvious differences are that the 2.3 from the Ranger has a large idler pulley in a nose on the front that the alternator drive belt wraps around. I have removed the pulley and shaft on mine. The cam cover had fixings for the coil pack whereas on the 2.0 this is on the rear water pump mount. The rear water housing that bolts onto the head is different, the Ranger one rises and has its radiator connection on the exhaust side.

The focus 2.3 HERE looks closer to the uk 2.0.

The engine numbers for a 2.0 start with code CJBA , the 1.8 = CGBA, sorry I don't know about the 2.3 as mine was new.

The 2.3's are used as the basis for race engines. I would have thought that whether the engine can be cost effectively, competatively be used would depend in part on the rules for the class being raced.

Alan Wardropper at Scholar (01449767711) is good contact and was involved with the development for the engine used in the Sports 2000 class.

A good source for Duratec information is HERE

Out of interest, what was your engine from and what class are you intending to compete in?

Cheers,

Colin
