On the Ranking i look also at weight of the car.
1600 Opel EcoTec (non stock MCU)
1600 4AGE

Pinto etc.
what would be the fastest engine in an locost?
is it the opel 1600? or the raw 4age??
The above comments are always meant to be from the above persons perspective.

If you are going with a lightweight track car I'd lean towards the Toyota, otherwise the Zetec is well proven, has plenty of tuning options, and
there is a readily available supply of 5 speed RWD gearboxes that will more or less bolt straight on.

Opel/Vauxhall Ecotec has a reputation for sticking valves earlier Opel/Vauxhall engines are a better bet

I can give you a little info on the 4AGE choices based on my experience.
16V 4AGE Phase III
20V 4AGE "Silvertop"
20V 4AGE "Blacktop"
16V has the most tuning potential and plenty of "off the shelf" parts. Starts at 130 BHP but you'll have to buy carbs or throttle
bodies to begin with.
20V Silvertop engine has a similar bottom end to the 16V but has 10.5:1 compression and comes with individual throttle bodies. 143 BHP standard.
20V Blacktop has lightened con rods + pistons, 11:1 compression and larger individual throttle bodies. 150 BHP standard.
Because of the steel block design they are as light as modern alloy engines and very compact too.
Fensport can supply low milieage import engines and have a small stock of "Blacktop" 20V engines at the mo.
IMHO you want to mod then stick to the 16V if you want a reliable standard engine go for the Blacktop 20V.

While I'm at it heres a pic of a Silvertop 20V
I like them because they are small, light, reliable, decent standard power and rev forever. Notice the four throttle bodies at the top, tidy design
and simple plumbing at the back of the head.

What about the costs of each option? I'd love a Duratec but think that a 16V redtop overs the best BHP/£

16V 4AGE Phase III £450 + carbs/TBs
20V 4AGE Silvertop £650
20V 4AGE Blacktop £750
Often overlooked but yep the Vauxhall XE is a gem. Just make sure you do your research and get the right block and head i.e. early Cosworth head
casting etc

Grass trackers I've seen using a Volvo 2.3L 8V all alloy jobbie. 16V head tranplants, turbos etc. Standard 140BHP lots of potential but not
widely used here yet. I'm no expert though.
