Pinto v X Flow - which one to go for?

I have two Pinto engines in the garage and i was quite happily going to put one of these into my locost.

However, a lad at work has got a 1700 crossflow with adapters ready for twin webers, the exhaust downpipe, lightened flywheel etc, much more sporty than my two, and I can get it for a song.

He says there will be a bit of hassle mating it to the Sierra gearbox.

Has anyone else done this swap, and feel they can help?

Any advice would be welcome, and as I'm no engineer, simple terms would be appreciated!

Thanks guys,

Mark (dazed & confused)

A 2-litre Pinto would be fine, but a 1600 doesn't offer enough to compensate for the extra weight and size. The 1800 has very few tuning bits available.

The x-flow is smaller and lighter, more old-fashioned (but the Pinto ain't modern either!). It is very suitable for use in the Locost.

As for fitting the Mk 9 box, it's a doddle! You will probably need to buy some imperial nuts and bolts (the Pinto may be metric), and you will have to remove some of the blanking plate. Then you use a x-flow clutch cover plate with an early 1600 Sierra driven plate. Job done!

rgds,

David
(who abandoned a 1600 Pinto for a X-flow)

Thanks David - that was quick - you surfing at work too?!

Some further q's if I may...

What size/spec is yours, and is it nippy?

What axle have you got? (mine is a bog std Mk2 Escort).

Also, what radiator have you got? I was going to go for a Micra (discussed a lot in other posts) with the Pinto - should be ok with the XFlow?

Should have mentioned it earlier - my engines are 1.8 and 2.0. XFLow - Smaller and lighter - a big plus.

The work you describe doesn't seem too bad, any other opinions before i snap this blokes hand off?

Cheers,

Mark

Just a few words. X-flow, X-flow, X-flow, X-flow, X-flow, X-flow, X-flow, X-flow, X-flow, X-flow, X-flow, X-flow, X-flow,
you know it makes sense.
BTW no such thing as bog std mk2 escort axle. Ratios as follows: 3.54, 3.77, 3.89, 4.11, 4.44. Shoul be an ally tag on the diff bolts with ratio on. If not then turning and counting will tell you.

Quite a shock there punters, fancy the PTM saying x flow!!!!

Actually the 2.0 pinto is a better engine 400cc up for a start, as tuneable as the x flow with more torque as well.

SFX..... Locodude spitting blood

It is a little tall for the Locost however

As for your reply chris.....

la, la, la, I'm not listening (puts fingers in ears.....)

Cheers

Chris

Both engines have there merits. Xflow - light, robust good history of tuning & can go up to 1800 if your feeling brave. Pinto - common easily tune plenty of cheap parts & can produce good power, 2.1litre common but I believe they could go 2.3.

As the saying goes you pay your money & you take your pick.

My x-flow is a '1600GT' that has been re-bored to 1660cc. It's mostly standard, except I've put in a Fiesta electronic distributor, replaced the carb with a Weber DGV32/36 (ex-Sierra 2litre), and taken the mechanical fan off (replaced by an electrical one). Don't know how nippy it is yet - not run it since its rebuild! Soon though, hopefully. The standard 1600 when new was rated at 80-85BHP, and I've probably taken mine to 95-100BHP, which suits me. It has also been converted for unleaded, which probably means I've lost 5BHP off that figure .

The axle is Mk2 Escort, with a 1:3.89 diff, which is a common one I believe.

I've used a Mk2 Radiator that I bought new from a local rad builder. It's a bit large, but it can be made to fit. Others have used rads from all sorts of cars - VWs, Micras, etc.

Happy building!

David

I personally think it is better when the seller sets the price, but leaving that aside, if he wants too much money, and you fancy and engine that is not much bigger or heavier that a xflow, consider a zetec, there's plenty around now at good prices

It's ages since I studied a xflow but I now that Westfeild xflow owners consider the zetec to be virtually a straight swap

My mate has just swapped a 10year old 1700 xflow westie for a 2 year old 2litre zetec westie.
Having driven both i would have to say the xflow was far more fun, it fair screamed. I expected the zetec to be much much better, but was dissapointed.
The xflow was 1700cc with twin 40's and a bumpy cam, Dyno print out of 138bhp.
The zetec is 2000cc twin 45's with omex 3D ignition, Dyno print out 145bhp (i think)
sure the xflow used a bit of oil but so what?. If i was going to choose a heavy agricultural low revving car engine for my locost it would be a xflow ( we'll if i could't get me hands on a toyota lump that is)

Now you come to mention it, one thing that they used to do with the Xflow when it first came out was to turn it into a Deisel, they were that strong.
