R1 engine v tuned zetec ??

Hi,

I'm planning the winter work already.

Just now I have and Avon with 2.0l Zetec with the weber carb Alpha performance kit.

Should I spend money on that taking the zetec up to say 200 bhp or start again with an R1 engine?

How would the R1 car compare with a 200 brake zetec car over 0-60, 60-100?

I presume the BEC will out handle the CEC?

Whats the most cost effective route to a biggar grin?

How much do you think changing from zetec to R1 would cost including engine cradle, loom, etc, everything and would I get much for my setup?

Any thoughts welcomed

Cheers

Steve

It's horses for courses. Either option can give enough power for the car, the zetec will be more forgiving in use but at a weight disadvantage. The lesson I am learning is to make the very best of what you have before moving on whether it be handling/brakes/engine. You should get a good bit back on the engine etc. It could work out better in the long run to sell your car as it is, which sounds a good spec, and build a new BEC from scratch.

some cars come with narrower footwells to accomodate the gearbox of a CEC. If you but a BEC from one of these companies you will get wider footwells as the box is built into the engine.

cars tend to have chassies that are designed around certain types of engine and so have strenghtening bars in different places. Car engines tend to be upright and central in the engine bay. bike engines lean over to the left.

Perhaps best to start with the engine that you want to keep, rather than changing.

Id say an R1 and a 200bhp CEC will be about on a par in acceleration, the bike engine might be a bit quicker off the line and up to 60 because of the sequential gearbox and close ratios, but the CEC will probably pull slightly stronger above 110-120mph where outright horsepower is more important than power/weight.
The bonus with the R1 is that its a £1k engine to replace, whereas I'd think the 200bhp Zetec would need some tarty bits inside it (cams, head work etc?) so if it went bang it would be more expensive to replace?

Steve,
I'm in the middle of fitting a 'blade engine into my Avon.
If you've ever been in a BEC, then, I think, you'll answer your own question!
(especially if you've ever ridden a 4 cylinder bike! - what zetec can rev to 11500 rpm?).
The only problem with the Avon is that you can't buy an off-the-shelf cradle from Tiger (except, perhaps, from Chester sportscars for a ZX9) so you'll have to make your own.
In fact, you'll have to design/havemade/modify most items to fit a bike engine into your Avon, which'll obviously mean that the conversion will take longer than that of other firms who cater for bike engine installations such as MK, MNR etc.
Still, I reckon it'd be worth it!
I say go for it!

Andy.

Thanks everyone

I still am not 100% sure what I will do, but I am swinging towards a bike engine as it will give me something to do over the winter months.

Many thanks

Steve
