HELP - Escort UJ replacement
Hi,
The Rear UJ on my Sons Jago Geep is FUCT (Failed Under Continuous Testing) 
Normally its an easy job. However, the Uj is Staked, ie does now use circlips to retain the joint. I have never done one of these, so whats the
process?.
Its a Std Ford Escort Joint on a shortened prop.
I would appreciate any ideas / pearls of wisdom etc.
Also good supplier for the UJ.

Some people will tell you that you can remove the stakes, renew the joint and restake with centre punch or similar. I have worked for a steering
company that staked UJ's and now work for a supplier of these parts and can say that i would not attempt or consider this on safety grounds.
I have just bought a new prop for my ZR which had circlip secured UJ's fitted. The only advice i can give that will be good on safety grounds
will be to replace the prop. You may get away with taking it to a specialist and just get the rear UJ and flange replaced. This will involve removing
the old one and rewelding the new joint in place. These parts should be available to purchase if you are a coded welder etc.
Sorry for the jobsworth answer but this is one area where safety counts.

I did one years ago on a Transit I had. If you cut a piece of bar that will fit through the yoke and push on the top of the UJ cup then push it
through with your bench vice by putting a socket on the other side for it to push into it will break the stake (mine did anyway). You can usually get
a UJ from bearing suppliers or car factors. Make sure you mark it so it goes together same as it came apart. You could get a rear prop from a Sierra
and weld your good front to it as an alternative.
