Transmission "clunk" noise

When I let the clutch out after changing gear I can hear and feel a "clunk".

I think it is coming from the dif, so I put the car in gear and rocked it forwards and backwards, and the nearside output shaft on the diff (lobro joint type) looks like itmoves in and out a few millimeters. I take it this isn't a good thing?

Is this a serious problem? Is the diff going to fail and lock the rear end up on me one day?

Suggestions welcome.

Cheers

Graham

I have just developed exactly the same problem with a live axle, a small clunk when changing gear, in the lower gears

Mines live axle and I had similar but it was just clutch cable adjustment, it made reverse almost impossible to select with the engine running. Lobros are supposed to have play to allow for the drive shaft movement aren't they? If the diff is oiled it will most likely whine for ages before any drastic failure. Check your bolts like in the earlier post.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Check tightness of all the bush bolts

edit: on the rear wishbones (or trailing arms)

Oh no! That diff was from me wasn't it! Hope it's ok...

Are you sure the drive flange is moving in and out a significant amount? That's odd and it shouldn't be able to do that unless the circlip inside has broken/popped off. I cant see how it'd do that under normal stresses and strains, but that might be the problem.

Hope you get it sorted. By the way - have you actually noticed any improvements/differences in the way it drives with the LSD?

Liam
