Urgent answer needed to odd question

A mate of miine has just rung. He's moving from Yorkshire to Kent today and in preparation for the journey bought some brake fluid to top it up. However he was half asleep doing it and has put some (he reckons 200ml) in the oil instead of the brake reservoir. Will he be ok or will it do some damage?

I would think it could do some serious damage. Personally I'd empty it all out, refill with flushing oil and run, then empty again and change oil filter, then refill. Hopefully he won't have done any serious damage if it's not been run yet.

You don't want to flush it out through the bleed nipples at the wheels - that would spread the oil throught the system and onto every seal !!!
I would remove the master cylinder resevoir and empty it. Then consider what to do next.

Just in case you don't know - oil wrecks rubber seals

I'd run it for 30 secs and drop the oil out, and refill with normal oil. Shouldn't do any harm for that time I wouldn't think.

Ive been biting my tongue but now have to ask - how did he manage to mistakingly id the brake reservoir for the oil filler??? I take it was a normal tin top and he's not very mechanically minded.

I dont know. Im not sure now wether he was intending to top up the oil and just picked up the wrong bottle or momemtarily thought the oil cap was the brale fluid reservoir. It was on an ancient & leggy laguna.
