The beast lives (well, coughs)

I had to share my day of ups and downs. The auto electrician was here for day 3 and got almost everything up and running (including the immobiliser fob, which had been a worry) ... everything, that is, except stuff that needs the engine running to check it (instruments, etc.) plus a couple of things that I need to get plugs for. So, put coolant in, a few litres of petrol in the tank, turned the key and... the starter turned but didn't crank the engine.

A short amount of investigation later and it turns out the cog on the starter (technical term) wasn't moving far enough along to engage with the flywheel - all this with the starter, spacer and bellhousing supplied for the K-Series by Fisher Sporstcars. Pissed off was not the word!

I spoke to Mark Fisher and it looked like a different starter would be needed - to give him his due he offered to exchange it even though I had had to make some adjustments (i.e. angle grinder) to the starter.

Did a bit of measuring and thought that it just needs a shallower spacer, so I rebolted it up with about 8 washers on each bolt instead of the solid spacer, just to try. Reconnected the battery, turned the key again and nothing, not even the starter motor itself . Thinks: "did I cock something else up, blow a fuse, or something?". After a while I gave up and came back inside.

Thinking about it all evening and then da-daaa! it's quite helpful to reconnect the ignition-starter lead to get it to turn! Wife and number one son came outside to the garage, crossed fingers, turned key and it fires! doesn't catch bcause the map sensor and a few other things aren't wired up, but definitely fires.

Like other people have said for their cars, it suddenly seems a huge jump forward when it actually seems like it might be capable of moving without being pushed.

Feeling a bit of a happier Humbug now - just need to get the spacer cut down.

Yup!

That definitely fired . Did you do a happy dance .

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
