long heater matrix/rad pipes
just been pondering over the heating system in my car- im building a midi and want to use the coolant to run a heater core. the thermostat is internal
to the engine though so id have to have 2 hoses goind to the front for the rad and 2 smaller hoses going to the dash for the heater core. anyone see
any problems with the loading on the water pump? the run to the core would be about 1.5m there and 1.5m back. it obviously wont damage the pump, being
mechanical but will it pump enough water to keep the engine cool? and keep me warm!?

The flow to the heater core must come off before the thermostat or the heater simply won't work when you need it most.
Also any air lock could prevent the thermostat by-pass flowing and this is vital for the thermostat to open coolant circulation within the block.
The bug bear on all rear engined front rad systems is air locks you will need to design in bleed points for both the front rad and the heater
circuit.

My Mojo has a heater; you will only need one long run of heater hose if you use my method:
-2 32mm pipes feed and return to rad
-1 heater hose from thermostat housing to heater matrix mounted at the front
-short run of heater hose from outlet of heater matrix is then teed into the 32mm return from the rad.
Hope that is clear. There is some stuff in my build diary, see link below (go to site contents and look up "heater matrix" )
I've not had any problems (that I'm aware of!) with this setup.

ooh, bloody good idea that. does it take much longer to warm up with there being more water in the return to circulate before the thermostat kicks in?

No, I get warm air through the heater within a couple of minutes. By doing it this way you actually reduce the total volume of water in the system,
but as you say during warm up, before the stat opens, you have more water in that circuit. Doesn't seem to be a problem though...
