Oil Temperature
We are after some advice as to where to mount an oil temperature sensor on our ZX12R engine. Initially, the sump seemed to be a good idea as this is
where the oil is picked up however; the oil in the sump would probably be cooler than the max temperature, having gone through the oil cooler and
returned to the coolest part of the engine and as such wouldn’t give a meaningful reading. We could use an adapter in the main oil gallery to plumb in
the temperature sensor together with the pressure sender unit but are concerned that the temp sensor may not actually be in the natural flow of oil so
again may not give a meaningful temperature reading.
The question is; would there be a considerable difference in the temperature of oil in the main gallery as opposed to the sump and where would be the
ideal place to mount it? Or is it not really that critical?

hmmm interesting. the oil takes different paths through the engine so will be heated by different amounts.
to be honest I don't think it matters where you measure it; what is important is what action you take depending on the temperature reading.
for example, if oil temp is measured in the sump, that may be lower temp than say at the top of the engine or at the oil cooler so you would take into
account the few degrees difference.
Its not like you will have a huge oil cooler like you have the water radiator so the difference betweem max. and min., oil temp won't be as
big.

On the Vauxhall Red top engine the oil temp sender looks to be on the engine side of the oil cooler sandwich\thermometer plate if thats any help.
Possibly the maximum temperature point after the oils returned down the engine?

using the search function I found this tread.
since my sender is mounted in the sump I do not have correct readings on the meter in the dash. when standing still the meter shows about 55-60
degrees but when driving it drops to minimum. is there any way to improve the readings. maybe wrap the sensor ( which is sticking out of the sump ) in
some kind of isolation material ?
the oil will always be cooler in the sump but a bit better reading would be nice. when measerung the temperature on the outside of the sump with a
thermometer is reads 75 degrees when standing still.
it is not really bothering me but maybe someone has some advice ?
cheers
