Type9 or not to Type 9

Last weekend I extracted the engine and gearbox from March 1989 Sierra Sapphire GLS.
It's got the injection '205' engine.

I was wondering how I confirm if it's got a Type9 or MT75 gearbox.
I was pretty sure it was the Type9 but on removal from donor it looked a little different than I remembered.

How do I tell?

Thanks,

James

Hi James
Type 9 is steel, MT75 is alloy!

Short answer - does it have a removable bellhousing?

OK that's actually a question, but if the bellhousing is removable it's a type 9.

MT75 is made of ally and has kind of criss-cross ribbing all over it - including on the integral (non removable) bellhousing. Type-9 is made of steel and will have a smoothish bellhousing, and a smoothish rectangular central section.

Does that help?

Liam

Certainly is...Mine looks just like that cept it has a big extra bit on the back full of centre-diff. It's my dream that one day my MT75 will be as shiny as that one.

Guess that means I've got a type 9 then!

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

What sort of paint would you use for a gearbox? Same stuff as for axles/hubs etc? Or will engine paint do?

Thanks,

James

nothing gets hot there.

I painted the bellhousing a nice smootrite silver, and the rest in gloss house (external) paint - ya cant see that bit its in the tunnel
