I have a small flange...

Seems that the English axle on my Striker has a small drive flange. The flange itself is quite thin and the propshaft UJ is bolted to it via nuts and bolts rather than the flange being threaded.

Are there any strength concerns with the smaller flange? Would it be ok for a mildly tuned 1.6 Crossflow (Kent BCF3, DCOE40's ported head, at a guess 100bhp or so)? I have a spare big flange and I need to change the pinion oil seal anyway, so this could be fitted, but obviously would need to get prop converted as well, would this be worth the time and money?

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Only comment I would make is that it worked fine on the car it came from, so why not yours?? Ray

To make a car go faster, just add lightness. Colin Chapman - OR - fit a bigger engine. Chippy

Mike,

If you decide to stick with the small flange, I have a spare one (small flanges) lying around that I'm looking to replace with a large one...if you wanna swap...

Hi the small flange is fine.

Also fitted to almost all the se westfields as std due to the larger flanges catching the drivers side chassis.

And also the one we use mosltly with 200+ bhp not a problem. unless you come across one that has been skimmed down on thickness .

Some one must have been doing this quite often for some reason as there are quite a few of them out there but were never std at ford or gkn supply.

If you want to know std thickness just say and i will measure one.

cheers matt

Cheers Mat, guess I'll leave it as it is, though will go and measure the thickness just to make sure.

Steve, you would be welcome to it if I had it in my possession. When I said I had a spare it's actually a friend building a Mk2 Escort rally car that said he has a spare I could use if needed. I will ask him if he would be prepared to donate it to you though.

I have 161hp and 185nm of 4age 20V standing in front of the same english axle

by the sound of it, it doesn't like to be throttle-smashed to the floor in 5th gear(towards 200km an hour).
but below that is doesn't make noise. so I'll just leave it in place!

it's just that my flanges seem to be slightly out otherwise I have bend brake disks. you can hear them fjjiepfjiepfjiep when driving 50km/h

you won't break it with the kent engine.

grtz Thomas
