Supporting a gear linkage
Hi All
I wasn't sure where to post this!
I have a long horizontal gear linkage in my car (about 5foot) that's almost straight apart from a small kink. It appears to work fine but could
do with a support about half way along (it's hanging by 2 cable ties!).
It's a bout 12mm (possibly half inch) in diameter and it needs to move horizontally by a few inches. Iwas thinking of drilling out a block of
plastic to 13mm and fixing that in place with a small bracket - any thoughts?
Regards
Wyn

I used some heater hose greased up with silicone grease and P clipped to the side of the service tunnel. Nice slidey action
Cheers,
Raz
When thinking outside the box doesn't work any more, it's time to build a new box

rose joint? might mean some dismantling of the gear link though...

Thanks Guys
Razman - nice and simple - I like it - and Locost too!
blakep82 - I'm not quite sure which kind of rose joint you mean? Could you show me? I don't mind dismantling the linkage - it has a
threaded join n the middle so it's quite easy to do.

A 1/2" rod end (i.e. rose joint) with a suitable female thread welded onto the chassis would be a reasonable solution, not least because it
would be self-aligning. The block of plastic suggested could also work fine, but it would have to be bolted down dead square to the shaft else it
will bind.

ideally you'd have a big spherical bearing (for the self alignment!) with a slippery hose inside it!
Me, id weld a bar round it (ie drill a 13mm hole, chop in two, put round it and tack back together.

stauff clamps, the green nylon things used to fix hydralic pipes to machinery, are great for this sort of thing.
Stauff Clamps Cataloge
your local hydraulics place will stock them.
I use them for antiroll bar mounts
must go, got to get to work!!

like this, either welded to the chassis, or weld a plate (with a hole through it) to the chassis and secure the rose joint with 2 nuts.
its basically what i plan to do with my steering collumn

a bit big, and a bit technical, but you see how the steering column goes through a rose roint just below the steering wheel, a similar set up could be
ideal for you gear link. also bolting in, rather than welding, means you can replace it easier if you need to
