Piston Broke (pinto)

I was tidying up garage last night and found this. Just to let you know this is what a conrod looks like after it has gone through the side of the block at 6,000 rpm on a 2 litre pinto. It is a bit rusty but it happened in 1989 Brilliant engine the pinto and they dont do this very often.
YES 1989!! Some of you guys would still be driving pedal cars then!!

I love seeing broken pistons, there is something quite satisfying about it. Like they are trapped in a confined dark space, covered in petrol, set alight, thousands of times every minute. And finally one makes a break for freedom. YAY

My mate has a collection from racing his two stroke bikes

Have just noticed your avatar

I aslo have a broken piston somewhere from my mini racing days. The crown of the piston broke off and the engine finished the race. We thought it was the big ends so lifted the engine out and took the head off and it took us 30 mins to notice we had 3 pistons at tdc

Fit Diesel Rods to a Pinto, makes them much less likely to break. only requires a very small amount of machining to fit.
Its what the Stock car boys do.

Leg out of bed I believe is the correct term for a conrod that decides to have a look what it's like on the outside!

Re: diesel rods

or fit cossie rods bit heavier, but even less work
and they are just about perfect length for the V6 pistons compression height

only 2 extra things need done - mod the pistons to take circlips & sort out oil spray jets for the small ends (i.e. cossie spraybar/ jets)

should get mine back in a couple of weeks
I've gone with forged pistons & a cossie crank too so I'll be very upset if it ever spits out a conrod

I can't be the only person who's done this can I ?

Seeing as Team Hellfire haven't got here yet.

I bet that piston weighs about the same as my whole engine

"Stock car boys" don't run diesel rods.

Please explain what the "small amount" of machining actually is, should anyone else wish to run them.

Thankyou.

no they run std injection rods at silly rpm untill.........

The guy that doing the work to my engine at the moment dosen't seem to think its worth it either, and he builds stock car engines (infact all the std parts out of mine will end up in someones race engine )

Both the diesel and cossie rods are in the Des Hammill pinto book

---------------------------------------------

diesel rods (I only know what I've read in the book)

basicaly you need ford 1600cc diesel rods (eg Mk3 Escort) and you'll need to grind the crank down to suit the smaller big end (2 or 3mm smaller I think), also some material has to come off the rod - I can't remember the details but the books easy to get hold of

------------------------------------------------

cossie rods

these are almost the same as pinto ones just a little longer (.060" or 1.524mm)
also they have bushed small ends to suit floating pins, and as mentioned above they don't have oil spray jets in them

so to fit them you'll need to get some pistons with a lower compression height (ie 2.8 V6) or get some with a thick enough crown to machine down to suit and then mod the pistons to take circlips

then all you need is some form of oil spray jets from one of the versions of the cossie
or des hammill mentions drilling the cossie rods, but I don't fancy that much
some people even say its alright without them but I wouldn't like to try it
(I'm going to use the cossie 2wd setup - jets mounted to the pickup pipe)

From an Spitfire, never did find anything recorgnisable as the valve

and from an MG A

The A came in for a missfire and oil leak

Yes, I know all about the diesel rods really. I wrote reams on here a few years back explaining how 2.2 Pintos were built. A lot have since copied it!

I no longer do them as I have lost my offset crank grinding facility but if I hadn't, could still sell a couple per month to people from this forum who do searches of the old stuff.

Incidentally its 3mm of the crank to fit a diesel rod and by offset grinding you can increase the stroke by that amount to achieve the extra throw and therefore capacity.

Gazza285 will remember it. Don't see him on here much these days, I don't know him but he knows his stuff. He's probably like me, gets fed up of the bar-room/internet engine experts and disappears for a bit now and then, despairing at the gullability of some people!

David,

Might be a bit far for you but these guys can do offset grinding no trouble.

Thanks Gazza, yes I know Bradford Grinders and have had a few bits from them over the years. Yes it's a bit too far for me and I've sort of left the 2.2 conversions behind. Quite a lot of work and the returns are only moderate. Thanks again. Dave

no i sold it i hit the back of someone doing the legal speed limit lol. it was fully poly bushed t3 turbo. large intercooler. i had custom cam pulleys made that cost £300 on there own. i had it roaded at 130bhp at 12psi and 180 at 20psi it was very fast but i had to rebuild the engine about every 12 months. ive got some pics somewhere ill find them out. i want another one but there getting hard to get now. i sold it for £300 in the end with the smashed front end. that was with 2 engines and a load of parts. i wish i never now lol
