Zetec on 40 Webers or Bike Carbs??

Hi,

What do you all think is the best option, iám looking at the most simple and "cheapest" way to replace the standard injectionmanifold on my 1.8 Zetec engine since it doesn"t fit in my car.

Shall i use 40 Webers or Bike Carbs (which bike carbs do you recommend)

What else do i need to get it running, o yeah i am not a good electrical tehnician!

Thanx.
Sebastian.

Out the two BIKE CARBS + you will need a manifold
I have zx9r carbs but you can use most big bike carbs 600cc up IE r1
try doing a search

I've gone for ZZR1100 carbs on my 1.8 zetec. Sparks from Megajolt. Dead easy to set up!

I once used 40 webers on a Fiat 2.0 twinky and they were a bu€€er to set up and spat more petrol out the inlets than the engine used.

There's people on here who have converted from webers to bike carbs and seen better economy and more power.

Why bike carbs rather than twin webers if you don't mind me asking?

While you've got to get an ECU to make sparks get one to squirt petrol and fit bike TBs.

I have just built a 1.8 zetec and am running webbers, ignition is driven by GEMs unit, they do tend to have a flat spot between 1100 and 1700rpm other than that plenty of grunt good for 110 plus.

I have also been involved in building an MK with 2 litre unit and blackbird carbs used as throttle bodies, this gave a big increase in torque but needed setting up on a rolling road. ECU was very expensive. PS have you sorted your steering ot as the silver top zetecs oil filter fouls the steering shaft ?

I'm in the process of getting all the bits for bike carbs for my Zetec and have just had a quote from knn manifolds of £140 as follows. Seems like good value to me:

My carbs returned respaced and fitted to a custom Stainless Steel manifold.

The jets would be re-drilled (Lathe) and needles adjusted to suit. This would allow the car to run but may benefit from a Rolling Road at a later date.

Respacing the carbs would intail New:-
Fuel Rail.
Choke Extensions
Throttle Extensions
Spacers.
Joining Hose & 8 Jubilee Clips

My Vortx is running a 2l Zetec with Alpha Gold Kit (Injection). Dion Panting built the car and apparently it was originally running on Webers but he could never get it to run right so converted to injection. Not sure if that helps but it might be worth contecting him through this forum. SOrry can't remember his login name perhaps somebody else might know

I had R1 carbs on my Pinto and they were OK and ran well do it was still not ideal to set up.

The only true way to set up bike carbs, as was the case with SU's, is to have a graph of nedle profiles(which is available) and them change needles using an exhaust analyzer to change the mixture at certain parts of the throttle opening. The main jets only really operate towards full throttle openings and the primaries work until around 1/4 throttle. The needle and the slide cutout control everything in between.

I opted for bike TB's and Megajolt on the Zetec and reckon the extra cost will be recovered in the fuel savings over a couple of years. It also drives a lot nicer at lower revs and pulls like a train.

Mapped injection for me every time.

If you source an ally flange from MNR and some ally tube from ebay you just need to find someone local with a TIG setup to weld it together for you. That's what I did and the manifold cost me next to nothing and fits like a glove.

Hi i dont mind i say bike carbs because there
generally cheaper to buy, once set up you don't have to mess with them , [ just fit them and leave them] unlike Weber's they don't bog down [ response is better ]
This is only my opinion

To get a filter to fit, I use a nice big Mondeo one, just cant the engine over a little and the front off set to the near side a little. I'm only talking an inch or so and no issues running like this.

My brother in law had a 2 litre MK indy with the Zetec he initially started off using the trust inlet plenum which utilises the ford throttle body he has since changed to bike carbs Hond Blackbird I think For the manifold he has used the injector rail from an eary ford escort this is like a sandwich plate he than cut some lengths of aluminium tubing at the correct angles and had theses welded in place . No problems running it he has seen a hike in Torque.
