overfilling on oil?

whats the risk to the engine? will it just burn it off, or can a bit too much cause any damage?

the beemer's been a bit noisy, checked the oil today and the dipstick was dry

The crankshaft will hit the oil, whisking it up and making it 'frothy'. This is very bad news for most of the inside of the engine, particularly the bits that rely on decent oil pressure like crankshaft bearings!

i've some oil in th egarage, i don't think there's enough there to overfill it. MOT's up soon, so may put it in for a service at the same time. next month i think.

You can also cause seals to blow out due to the hydraulic pressure if you really over do it.....Oli.

because i don't fancy a full oil change tonight, and i don't know how much is actually in there just now. chucked in the rest of what i had on my bottle of oil (which was barely 3 pints) and its at least showing on the dipstick now

Don't know about beemers but years ago i overfilled a pinto with oil by mistake and discovered that if you go round roundabouts sideways at 6,000 rpm you gets lots of smoke followed by a big bang. The oil level dropped quickly after that.
What kind of beemer is it and where did the oil go?
If its a green 7 series honest i didn't know there was anything wrong with it when i sold it
