Bike carb float angle

Im having mare!!!!!

Ive fettled my carb manifold and its starting to look great. On the Keihins, above where float bowl attaches there is a line cast into the main carb body. Im sure this is the main float level. Problem is ive fitted huuuuge K&N filter and where it willpoke through bonnet isright through some vents i cut ages ago and will make the job look V.naff.



Iv looked at Boggs gallery and seen V8 and V12 installs where the carbs are vertical. So why do we have to seek this perfect float angle?????
Ive spoken to Boggs and they say they use the float bowl mating surface as the level line. However to get my filter exitting where i want i ned a slightly shallower angle than that (between 5 and 10 deg less). Would this cause a problem?



Im now thinking of selling my DIY ali manifold and ordering one from Boggs. Just not sure how to spec over the phone! I have some drawngs but only a telephone number for them. Might try talking to Steve tomorrow, wasnt in this morning.

O Darren stop worrying and just fit them .
when i spoke to boggs they told me they dont alter the floats at all on the v8 so you should be ok

the near vertical carbs are normally R1 or other yamaha 1000 engines
I would'nt think 5 to 10 degrees will alter the way the carbs work after all they work when the bikes on one wheel at angles alot more than 10 degrees.

The answer i got from Bogg Bros was the R1 carbs should sit at a 35 degree angle from the face of the head. I dont know how critical the measurement is though. The only other thing to look out for is some gsx carbs they are slightly straighter. hope im not talking pi5h.

I know im worrying too much, thats the problem with training as a toolmaker - everything has to me micron perfect even when nearest inch is OK!!

But seriously does a few degrees between friends really matter? Bike still run well up and down steep hills dont they?? (ooops - typing too slow - more eliquently put by Rich!)

The air filter is about 160 x 450 x 100 deep. If i had a little foam one it would clear bonnet no probs but - K&N was cheap and i like the trumpets to have lots of space.


I wish i could just drive over to Boggs in the ZR but they arent close and i dont get Saturdays off at the mo due to doing this house up. Looks like ill have to try and make the trip.

Just checked AA route finder. Going via A19 and suttn bank it is 88 miles and 2 hrs 24 mins (hopefully 1hr 45 in reality) - not easy to pop out from work then!!

no, sorry, not at the mo but i will sort one as soon as its stops raining and i get the car out.

I have done some detailed sketches tonight to simulate if the vents will clash with filter and it was looking iffy. I now know where i need the the filter to sit using the head studs as a datum.

I think, hand on heart, i just want a Boggs shiny manifold and no trouble when time comes to get them to RR the set up. I just hate to have to wait 4 to 5 weeks to be able to start fitting them. I also know to get what i want i need to go there asap........ now where did i put my waterproofs!

I have just looked in your archives is the vents the round ones ?
can you make a air box like mine to position the filter where you want it have a look in my photos under zx9r carbs there is about 3or4 photos that may help you

No Graham, the round ones clear no probs. Ive cut 3 traingular vents either side of the bonnet scoop which you cant see in that pic. They correspond to where the foam filter for 38DGAS is at the moment. I had an issue with the bonnet stopping air flow into current carb.

When i try to explain it there shouldnt be a problem but if you see the filter you will see what i mean. Ive gone overkill onprevention of air starvation this time.


Ive seen your airbox. Yes - it would work for me but ive done a lot of work to get this one to fit and bonded it to the Kawasaki trumpet plate with copiuos amounts of sikaflex.

Well, ive just had an interesting visit to Boggs. Fantastic place and great people. As i suspected the float angle doesnt have to be maintained when fitting bike carbs to cars. Ive just ordered a new manifold at a shallower angle and with TPS bracket fitted to allow for a neater install. I have also found out that my air filter is good for up to 500BHP!!!!! I may be able to get a thinner replacement element to help keep it all tidy.

I may put my old bike carb manifold up for sale soon.

Nah, ive got none to burn. They are quoting 4 to 5 weeks so ive asked for 21st August. Need to do a bob a job now.

Iam quite amazed by their place. Its an Aladins cave of motoring history. Id love a place like that one day.

Steve was able to show me a ZZR1100 manifold he has just completed for someones Pinto. High quality. We were able to put my carbs on and kind of suss out what it would be like in my engine bay. The silicon joiners i have will be spot on. I now need to sort out a bike fuel pump and some cables ready for the big day - shouldnt be too hard.

Hi Darren,

I would be interested in your manifold if your selling?

If not did you use easyweld or proper weld for the ali? If easyweld how did you find it?

I am considering 'having a go' at making one as im not feeling rich enough to get a boggs made for the r1s just yet
