gearbox overhaul problem
Hi All gearbox experts
I decided to strip and check my gearbox before installing.
All bearings seem to be ok so only fitted new seals
On reassembly I found I could get 1st 2nd and reverse but not 3rd 4th or 5th.
After removing the tail casing I could then get all gears but with some difficulty.
It appeared that the slots in the selector forks didn't line up every time
making it difficult for the selecter shaft to rotate.
By moving the 1st 2nd gear fork by hand I could get them to line up.
On investigation the 1st 2nd gear selecter ring appeared to have excesive
lateral movement compared to the 3rd 4th and 5th rings.
I suspect the "blocking bars" (I think that is what they are called)
are not holding the ring in the correct position.
I would apreciate comments from all you very knowlegable folk.
I hope I have made myself clear.
cheers

I assume that its a type 9, if so get the Haynes "Gearbox overhaul" book, and reassemble it. The book goes through all the stages very
clearly, bet that it will work after that. HTH Ray

I have the Haynes Manual and have reassembled numerous times without success.

When you put the tail housing on have you got the spike in the bottom correctly positioned between the ears of the spring that hangs down. Also is the
plastic clip on the bottom of the stick correct way round.

Hi Steve
It's difficuly to be sure if the spike is between the ears of the spring but having lined up the spring prior to fitting the tail housing I can
only assume it is ok,but I will double check.
Is there a way of checking it.
I never removed the plastic clip so I assume it to be ok.

Hope you get the box sorted,
As for Coventry, stay in Cumbria.
I may join you.
Or I quite fancy Northumberland.
Steve.
