Newly rebuilt engine smokin'
Hi all,
how long should a newly rebuilt engine (red top if it matters) smoke for? Been running for about 10 minutes in total and is still smoking white - when
should I get worried??

Are you sure the timing's right? I had this once on an A series, and a slight tweek of the dizzy sorted it all out.

When I rebuilt the 924 engine, well top of the engine, It smoked for about 30 minutes. I didn't think it would ever stop. But it did.
I even went as far as making sure there was no water i the exhaust.
I assume you're not losing water?

No water loss - the 30 minutes sounds good, need to run it for another 20 at least then!
The run to SVA will take about an hour, so that should sort it out - if we go, ridiculous weather tomorrow means might have to give it a miss..

You only have 10 mins on the engine and are going to drive an hour to SVA? You are a brave man!
I put 100 miles on the clock before my SVA to make sure nothing was going to fall off. All on private roads of course
Are you a Mac user or a retard?

mine did nearly 2 hours to sva, with no real running prior to that...
i did have a backup vehicle following me though with a trailer!!

My first drive was to its SVA. Not very far but it was round the North Circular at 08:00.
No back up.

find out what the smoke is.
get a glassd of very cold water and place it at the exhaust; the smoke should condense and then you can smell it to narrow down what it can be:
petrol, water or oil.
leave the engine on idle for 20 or more minutes until it has fully warmed up and the stuff should disappear - hopefully it is just crud in the
exhasut burning off.
check your oil and water levels afterwards.
don't worry about driving to SVA - I did a few pratise runs on the private roads near my house, nothing major - just to test the brakes.

Don't worry chris, my XE's always steam for a good while.
Run it until the fan kicks in, if its still steaming then its more of a worry.

Cheers for that Nat.... will have more time to let it run preSVA as the alternator packed up and had to be changed - meant I missed the test though

smoking doesn't usually stop before the engine is completly warmed up about 20 min idle or 10 minutes drving around town, after I've
replaced a headgasket.
don't strees the engine for the first few runs though otherwise the gasket will go pop again, learned that the hard way!
