RV8 Oil Pump
Am I correct in saying that the oil pump is driven by the distributor, so if I remove the distributor I need to find some way of leaving the gear to
run the pump.

100% correct.
From late 1994, a redesigned timing cover, incorporating an integral crank-driven oil pump was used. So answer is 100% no for those engines.
here is photo of how this can be achieved; the distributor body is machined off and the shaft shortened. I believe there is a bearing fitted at the
end - dunno details, nothing to do with me.

Another way is to fit the later front cover complete with oil pump. The pump has a much greater capacity and solved a lot of the problems. You also
need a pickup pipe and a different sump pan. I think I still have all the bits I used before going to dry sump lying around if you are interested

I do believe that the crankshaft is different too. The nose is longer to take count of the fact that the drive key is not present on the dissy
equipped engines, so it's not easy to just swap covers without changing the cranks.

fbd is right; crank is different as it drives the oil pump. not a simple 10 minute job.
